SAILING

Brass Bell Easter Regatta

Day 1
We had the Seal Island Race which we dedicated in memory of Pam Ghillino who passed away last week.
We have had a fantastic turn out for this regatta with at total of 21 entries - a record number we have seen in a long time. The race was delayed as we were waiting for the wind to swing round from North West to South East and settle in. Race started at 11h16 with two boats OCS who had to turn round and restart once they managed to get clear of the fleet. Despite the slow start to and around Seal Island, the wind picked up and the fleet had a good breeze to the finish.

Day 2
RTC Race was abandoned due to winds reaching 35 knots. The evening was enjoyed with a bring and braai, followed by The Dusty Rhodes Band playing for us - a great evening was had by all who attended.

Day 3
"Whittle Rock Race"due to the rough sea state and strong winds a mark was not laid for Whittle rock. However a medium distance race around the bay was set and off the sailors went in a dying breeze. Race course was shortened as many got stuck rounding the first mark and time limit was extended by discretion of the Race Committee.

Prize giving was hosted by the Brass Bell in the Bikini bar, what a great way to end a great regatta. Everyone enjoyed the array of snacks and live music.

Message from Pam's daughter Debbie below.

"Anthony and I would like to thank you, the members, committee and Commodore so very much for the beautiful flowers that arrived for mom.

We really appreciate your kind gesture. FBYC was mom’s home away from home for a very large part of her life, and she really did have an amazing amount of knowledge about the club and its members in her head. Some of which may have helped her with the general knowledge quizzes!

We will miss her terribly, and always look across the bay at the swaying mast heads of the yachts with great fondness.

Kind regards
Debbie Ghillino

Cape Coastal Rowing Club, Alfred Rowing Club and Oldenburg Regatta March 2018.03.27

The weather gods smiled on Cape Coastal Rowing Club's 2018 "Oxford-Cambridge" boat race on March 24, with ideal conditions for the 1.4km circular pursuit race (10 sec gap between boats) from the club slipway around the swing moorings. The fastest boat of the day was rowed by a composite crew comprising two members each of the visiting Oldenburg Rowing Club and CCRC, although Alfred Rowing Club took the overall inter-club competition. And there were two firsts for the Lawhill development crews who are coached by CCRC - a victory for the boys against Grassy Park Rowing Club, and a creditable performance by the girls in their first ever regatta.

Discover Scuba

This year’s dive festival will once again have a PADI DSD (discover scuba diving) program to run alongside the regular festival dives. With the help of local PADI Instructors and dive schools we aim to get 100 DSDs done over the 2 days of the festival and thereby introduce 100 new scuba divers to Cape Town diving. The cost of a festival DSD is only R200 (it’s normally around R1 000) or R100 for scholars or it’s free to FBYC members. All the equipment you need is included.

We will start running DSD groups at 9am on the Sat & Sun of the festival with small groups and their instructor getting kitted-up and heading out every few minutes.

To book a DSD spot please contact our DSD co-ordinators Sarah and Steve at Dive Action info@diveaction.co.za or phone (021) 511 0800 or phone or WhatsApp 082 881 1660.
