YOU'RE ALL INVITED

Andrew MacK

ORC 140 NSRI - BOAT & CRADLES ON TRAILERS

Both Station 10 and Station 5’s boat loaded onto the trucks and heading for the docks. The vessels will be transshipped meaning they will be reloaded to other ships in other ports as they transit to Durban.

The picture (below left) is the shipping cradles where the vessels will be lashed to and the steel cradles chained to the decks. Each Orc will take the space of 36 20ft containers. This space is donated by Maersk and is valued a total donation cost of 1.5 million which is what they lose by giving up that container space.

Our boat (Donna Nicholas) is being pulled out the factory (Below right). She will be shipped from Durban to CPT and completed in Cape Town.

Cheers,
Darren Zimmerman

INTERVIEW - DALE KUSHNER

Single-handed sailing gets massive publicity right around the world, probably due to the fact that those who follow it are in awe of the sailors who have to do everything on their own without any outside assistance. These are hardy men and women, and generally damn fine sailors too.
Since the heady days of Bertie Reed, John Martin, JJ Provoyeur and Neal Petersen, South Africans have not participated in this aspect of our sport. That was until late last year when Donald Alexander completed the Route du Rhum race, and more latterly Dale Kushner competed in the Cape Town to St Helena Race as the only single-handed competitor.
I certainly hope that Alexander and Kushner have inspired others to consider the single-handed option.
