CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Sat, 15 Dec

The warm sunshine was out, a gentle breeze blew and the club was buzzing. This all set the scene for the children's Christmas party, which turned out to be a great success again this year.

There was plenty of fun family games to play. The jumping castle was popular as well as the bean bags and hula hoops. Some of the children even allowed their colouring artwork to be displayed on the wall.

The fruit platters and popcorn went down well with everyone.

NSRI made sure Santa was kitted out to stay afloat and that he arrived safely on the jetty.

All the children enjoyed their gifts for the rest of the afternoon.

SAILING REPORT

IMG_04751

Last weekend two sailors from the FBYC youth sailing program competed in Cape Town Race Week at Royal Cape Yacht Club. They sailed on board a J/27 called Pure Magic. The regatta was 3 days long and included bay races and races around the cans.

Neo Kgaukgelo Thobela and Lukhanyo Tom have been attending weekly sailing training at FBYC for quite a while and both are now going into matric at Lawhill College. Tom was on the foredeck and Neo was managing the halyards and they both performed extremely well in their positions. Overall the team came 5th in a fleet of 8 boats.
Each of them have written a few paragraphs about their experience.

Lukhanyo Tom:
Cape Town Race Week was my first regatta in Table bay and I am really grateful to take part in the regatta. I nearly panicked when I was told I am going to focus on the bow , with spinnaker and all, but I told myself I can do this and this is my time to learn the bowman position. Cape Town race week was my second regatta this year , the other one was the Spring regatta at False Bay Yacht Club.

It was really awesome, I also got to see the Cape 31s and stay at the famous Royal Cape Yacht Club. The races were so much fun yet tiring. This regatta has helped me regarding where I want to go in terms of Sailing. I am now certain I want to stick with sailing in future. I also got to chat with a few Boat owners who shared their stories of when they were still a youngster like me, still learning sailing and doing regattas.

Royal Cape Yacht Club was awesome and also the Sailing academy gang who also made my weekend great and I learnt a lot. Thanks to everyone who made it possible for me to be part of Cape Town race week.

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE CREW I SAILED WITH , ROYAL CAPE YACHT CLUB STAFF AND ALSO A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO MY HOME-GROUND, FALSE BAY YACHT CLUB WHERE I LEARNT SAIL.

Neo Kgaukgelo Thobela:
Cape Town Race Week was a wonderful experience for me because I not only got greater exposure to sailing , I also learned many things I previously did not know about the sailing world and racing.

I also made many new friends who offered me a sail on their boats when I'm in Cape Town which I really appreciated. It was also my first time sailing with so many different class boats so that also made me more aware of the importance of knowing rules of racing.

Another thing I enjoyed was sleeping at the academy, I made new friends and also got some great sailing advice from my fellow peers.

Another aspect I didn't mention was the crew I was sailing with , they were absolutely perfect they made everything easy for me even though it was my first time doing halyards and now I have acquired another skill that will definitely come in handy the next time I sail because I will be able to do more on the boat now.

All in all I had a great time and I certainly look forward to sailing the Race Week again in the future.

I would like to thank FBYC and the owners of PURE MAGIC for making it possible for me to be able to sail in this year's Cape Town Race Week. It really means a lot to me that you made this opportunity possible and I will forever be grateful.
Wed 19 Dec - Fun Twilight Race

We saw 11 boats out for a beautiful evening sail. The course was set, the race was started and the gentle 10-12 knot breeze stayed till the last boat was back on dock.

Was a great sight seeing the fleet out in the bay.
