It was with sadness we heard of the passing of Bernie Gray, a stalwart FBYC member from our parents generation and, who we remember from our time as club members in the 70s and 80s.

Bernie made a significant contribution to the development of the club when it was relocated to allow expansion of the Naval Dockyard. The new clubhouse was being developed on the foreshore to replace the initial temporary wooden and concrete prefabs. New jettys were needed to cope with the growth of the club and the hosting of major regattas, and improvements needed for the slipping of boats. Bernie had the engineering nous to realise the vision a bridge across the top of the rocky outcrops in front of the clubhouse to provide the jettys, which today provides access to the 250+ marina berths of the STMC. The slipway was significantly improved from the original, Bernie's "block on a rock" was used to winch boats through the sand and later replaced by a continuous chain winch which he designed and built.

Bernie was one of the pioneers of the Flamenca fleet in the 70s, his Faquieta (F12) was unique in having long cockpit with wheel steering. He raced it successfully for many years and, like many others of that era, handed over the tiller to a teenage son. Brent campaigned the boat successfully in WP and National Championships that followed. This gave Bernie time to complete the building of his steel yacht, Lady Gray, which was launched in 1980s, and then enjoy cruising in False Bay.

We were indeed fortunate to have had FBYC members like Bernie and others of his ilk as club role models. Our condolences to Gill, Brent and the family at this sad time.
