NEWS FROM MEMBER DAVE STANIFORTH

It is lekker to arrive in Cape Town to blue skies, warm sunshine and a light breeze, but we had no sooner settled into the Scott family home in Glencairn than the South Easter started blowing! It was quite appropriate as I had just come across a newspaper clipping about sailing in 30 knots under spinnaker at FBYC.
http://sailing.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/1985-01-30-583.pdf

I remember that race as if it were yesterday - it was a very wet and uncomfortable on the weather rail to Whittle Rock which was more than made up by an exhilarating spinnaker run that followed. Soon after rounding the leeward mark the call was made to change down to a storm jib, which was a first on Aries! Behind us, L26 Kalimera experienced a knock-down broach nearing the mark under spinnaker. Aries tacked around and headed back to give assistance. Once they came back upright and all 5 crew were seen onboard wrestling the flogging spinnaker, racing was resumed. The Aries crew on that day also included Goofy Alexander and Pete Methven. Would I go out racing in those conditions again - probably not as racing would be cancelled!

Garage parties of a different kind… Plans to beat the wind and finish much needed maintenance work at an indoor venue worked the charm this week. Thank you, Captain Estelle for opening your home, who with Bryne and hard working teams got our blades and boats ready to roll in time for the weekend.

The rare occasion of an aborted Saturday club row ended well with team bonding and Lekker coffee opposite the Navy entrance, CCRC’s old stamping grounds before the comforts at FBYC.

Yesterday’s pristine conditions brought a good turnout to face the Easterly challenge for happy rewards on the flat, a beach landing and long swim at little Long Beach.

Admirals regatta offers three different bridges and race officers - dinghies and small catamarans, small inshore keeboats, and offshore keelboats.
Offshore, the regatta offers an ORC racing class and a medium distance ORC and PHRF sailing class.
