Notice to Owners of SA Sailing Listed Vessels Moored in Marinas or Yacht Clubs Hull Inspections

HELENE DINKY KNIPE (1932-2020)

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of Dinky Knipe, matriarch of a founding family of FBYC. Dinky with her outgoing and engaging personality, was one whom laid the foundations for the family-friendly club that FBYC always was, and continues to be.

Dinky worked tirelessly with other FBYC wives and mothers to establish and run galleys over 3 decades. The first at the original club house in the old Bus Station (now Bronze Age), then again in the prefabricated temporary clubhouse, and finally when the current clubhouse was built in the early 80s. There was always food waiting for the hungry crews of all ages returning from racing in False Bay.

Whilst not a sailor Dinky was great supporter of her sailing family.
Buccaneer Jumbo, was built and skippered initially by husband Cecil and then by their late son, Peter. It was indeed a tragedy for the Knipes when Peter and his cousin Barry Lee were killed in the motor car accident, in which they had no fault, returning from the yacht club one night in April 1976. The Barry John Lee Memorial Trophy was raced by crews in past years, and the many of the winners have gone on to be successful skippers themselves.

Dinky also worked in the sailing office for many years at Royal Cape Yacht Club, and many from the WC sailing fraternity were at her funeral service in St. Saviours, Claremont last week. There were many others from other walks of their lives, including the Crankhandle Club.

Dinky suffered from Dementia in recent years, she and Cecil (well into his 90s) have been supported by son Ian and daughter Diane through these tough times. Our thoughts are with all her family at this sad time.
