RADIO CONTROLLED REGATTA

RC - Results

Photo's by Nic Botha
Sunday saw our inaugural regatta for Radio Controlled Yachts. We had a great turnout of just shy of 20 competitors including a visiting fleet of 9 Start73 RC yachts.

The conditions at the 11am scheduled start were not very conducive to any kind of sailing at all with a steady zero knots across the entire Simon's Bay. Not with standing the forecast the breeze did come through with some pretty decent gusts and the racing got underway pretty quickly with the CAPE.Point785s starting first followed one minute later by the Start73s.

The added sail area on the local Cape. boats made for some tricky sailing both upwind and then on the reaching legs. The smaller lighter rigged Starts came through our fleet pretty quickly in the first couple of strong wind races. As in all Yacht racing the heavy weather plays a part and there were soon quite a few casualties and some pretty damaging collisions to add to the action.

The breeze did moderate and swing to a more steady Westerly and all told our RO Steve Casey managed to get in a total of 10 races for both fleets. The results were kept a secret until the prize giving which was held shortly after all the boats had been rinsed off and packed away.

A great event, huge fun, exciting for the spectators and will become a regular feature on the FBYC calendar.
