CLUB REMINDERS & NOTICES

NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS

It has come to the attention of the marina company that skippers of boats involved in collisions or contact incidents with other boats when manoeuvring in the confines of the marina are not reporting them.

Please, the protocol is, to file a report in the incident book at the soonest opportunity, irrespective of you seeing visible damage or not. In addition, try to make personal contact with the owner.

If you do not do so and it is reported by a third party, your name will come up at Gencom and you will be suitably chastised.

Keep up to date with research on Steentjie fish nesting behaviour happening this spring from the False Bay Yacht Club.

For the first time in South Africa, you can follow the secretive nesting behaviour of the endemic South African Steentjie (Spondyliosoma emarginatum). This nesting behaviour is being documented as part of an MSc carried out at the University of Cape Town by Nina Faure Beaulieu with supervisor Colin Attwood. The males in this species create nests during the breeding season (which starts in late August) to attract females. These dedicated dads then guard the eggs until they hatch. What’s very exciting is that this behaviour has never been properly documented before! A nesting site has currently been found at Glencairn and in previous years they have also been found within the False Bay Yacht Club.

To keep up to date with cool footage of these super dads clearing their nests follow the research blog at: https://openexplorer.nationalgeographic.com/expedition/shysteentjies
