ANGLING

Cape Boat and Ski Boat Club held its annual October Comp last week. It was a great success. Friday and Saturday were fished with a lot of big tuna caught. First prize was won by Sam Brown with a 107 kg yellowfin. Over 200 tuna were caught by 30 odd boats and 120 anglers with fish weighed from small longfin of 10 kg to that whopper winning fish. Sam walked away with R60 000 cash prize and lots of new toys from sponsors.

SAILING

With the 'spring sailing season' almost over and the rugby world cup interference nearly done the club sailing is in for a bumper summer season. The new calendar (button below) shows some changes from what was originally published, the main change is the shifting of the 'Compass Rose' to the weekend of the 14th - 15th December. This is because there is a full moon on the 12th and all things being equal the fullish moon should shine brightly for the competitors taking part in this night-time race. Some suggestions have been made to perhaps move the start to the Friday evening, this is an option that we will look at nearer the time as the weather might also be a mitigating factor. The Medium Distance race no 2 scheduled for this last Sunday was postponed to Sunday 24th November. Nothing to do with the World Cup Rugby semi final on Sunday it was the extreme weather with 40 knot gusts and driving rain. Well played to the Springboks.

Also on the calendar is a Neptune's Sponsored Twilight Series - 4 races with 3 results to count. Should be fun and if there are sufficient entries the series will have 2 divisions.

In the next week we will be placing our 4 new permanent race marker buoys in positions: #1 Neptune's Buoy on the Simon's Town side of the Lower North Battery, roughly in the position of the original North Limits buoy. #2 Clan Stuart Buoy, on the 21st November it will be 105 years since the SS Clan Stuart a British turret steamer ran aground. #3 Fish Hoek Buoy in the position of the old Tudor House buoy which broke free about 10 years ago. #4 Murdock Valley Buoy somewhere up the coast towards Millers Point, the exact position yet to be decided but a suggestion is to place it offshore of the "A Frame' dive sight.

With the influx of seasonal holidaymakers descending on the club we are proposing to have a couple of 'cruising' events, these are as always weather dependent. The first is a casual pursuit race to Seal Island on Sunday 1st December. The 1st starter being set off at around 11am, hopefully this fun event will conclude with a 'bring n braai' get-together afterwards.

There is also an open weekend on the 21st - 22nd December for a across the bay cruise, overnight anchor out at either Pringle, Rooi Else, Buffels or Cape Point, once again all weather dependent ? etc etc

Early January starts off with the two Cape to Rio starts on Saturday 4th and 11th. Our official club sailing kicks off on the 15th with the new Summer Twilight 5 race series.

And for them feeling like an adventurous February why not look at the Mykonos Offshore in late February. Depending on the interest in this event we will look at a 'Bay to Bay' pursuit race on the Sunday preceding to help motivate the competitors going round to Royal Cape Yacht Club for the Mykonos.

That's about all for now, see you all out on the water.

Kind Regards,
John Leslie
