NEW SIMON'S TOWN MARINA COMPANY SLING LIFT

Wondering what the bright yellow frame is out on the hard?

STMC answer your questions.

The new bright yellow chassis standing in the yard is a replacement for the base section of the old Sling Lift, now almost 15 years old.

• It was designed by a local engineering company, based on the design of the old unit, with some changes
• It was fabricated by a local fabrication company
• The max capacity has been increased from 20 tons to 30 tons
• The whole structure is totally sealed, no water can get inside
• The width has been increased from 4.6m to 5.0m
• The height has been increased by 250mm, which should cater for yachts of up to 2.6m draft
• We will use the existing wheels, after overhauling them
• We will use the existing towers after checking them through
• The existing hydraulics will be modified, repaired and installed
• The paintwork will be retouched/resprayed once we have all finished our installation work
• Once up and running it will be officially load tested so that a safety certificate can be issued
• We are hoping to have a max down-time of two weeks

PADDLING/ ROWING

Our tour calendar for the year is complete.

CCRC had the pleasure of watching the Springboks run to victory on our first ever tour to Stilbaai last weekend. Undoubtedly the highlight of the tour, we joined the friendly locals at Stables Pub and Restaurant to celebrate in true Stilbaai style.

We also hosted two CCRC friends from afar, Peter O’Dell - Commodore of Port Owen Yacht Club, and Nic Krone from Mosselbay, both with their own boats in tow.

More special memories as we rowed up and down the Goukou River to the mouth where a keen Capetonian recorded rowing footage of us and shared it when we bumped into him at the pub!

Rowing distances in a double, single and two quads covered 14, 18 and 15 km between Friday evening and Sunday morning. All this was topped by first class accommodation in the olive groves at Oudewerfskloof Olive Estate.

We hope to share this special destination with our foreign tour visitors next year.

SAILING

Hopefully the weather plays along and allows us to race the finale in the 10 race Spring Twilight Series which started way back in the beginning of September. With 5 races completed and discards coming into play the top step of the podium is far from decided. Could be any one of Alegria, Argyll, Fire-Fly or perhaps even one of the Miuras, Snowgoose or Apple Pie. Too tight to call at this stage, we will have to wait until Wednesday.
Saturday's RTC race is the final of the Spring RTC Series, although the long term wind forecast is not looking that friendly at this stage.

Next Wednesday 20th November kicks off the 4 race Neptune's Twilight Series which should produce some exciting sailing with participation prizes each week culminating in the Finale on the 11th December or if necessary the following week on the 18th which at this time is an optional Fun twilight option.

Our 4 new racing marks as mentioned in a previous new post should be placed in their positions in in the next available weather window, hopefully before the start of the Neptune's Twilight Series. These additional permanent marks together with the existing Paintsmiths (Glencairn) Buoy, Castor and Phoenix Cardinal Buoys will allow for some interesting and exciting courses to be set in the future.

There are 2 distance events coming up towards month end including the Summer Medium Distance #2 on Sunday 24 November and a Seal Island FUN Pursuit race on Sunday 1st December.

And Remember to plan for the Compass Rose on the December long weekend.

Kind Regards,
John Leslie
