Someone has decimated the population in the marina, please keep an eye out for poachers and report them to SAPS.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS
|
Members Please Note Club Rules under Lockdown Adjusted Level 3, following normal COVID protocols such as sanitizing, temperature checks and signing in at the main access point:
Curfew: Between 21h00 and 05h00. No access to the Club during curfew hours.
Masks must be worn at all times – this is not negotiable because the wearing of a mask covering your nose and mouth is required by LAW. Access will not be granted to persons who do not comply with this regulation.
Crow’s Nest Bar: Sale of alcohol prohibited – bar is closed until further notice. Members may not transport alcohol to and from their vessels.
Pier 23 Restaurant : Open to all from 08h00 to 16h00 daily. No alcohol to be served.
Social gatherings are prohibited – No braais, No swimming, No picnics on the lawn, No gatherings under the deck and on the upper level of the club.
Sailing /Powerboating : Allowed. Members must sign in their guests who are joining them on their boats.
Rowing/kayaking: Allowed. Slipway Access for launching boats : Allowed, usual trailer parking protocols to be adhered to. All recreational fishing members must have a recreational fishing permit.
Boats on the hard standing : Members may work on their boats on the hard.
We have to watch the capacity of 100 persons outside of the clubhouse very carefully as we have to consider the numbers including contractors and staff working at the Club.

It has been 4 weeks in Palma now and week 3 was very interesting with mother nature keeping us on our toes. From boats flying all over the show and my bike being blown to the bottom of the marina by a 56kt gust, it was a good week and we ended on a high.
|
In the mid week I had the opportunity to meet the Co owner of Quantum Racing of Quantum Sails(TP52s) and the Americans Cup team, American Magic. I have been offered an opportunity to get some sail training when the boat is in the water. All thanks to Colin's random walk into yard.
|
After 3 weeks of day working at STP, on Friday afternoon, I was offered a position by Captain Colin(M/Y Mirage 53m) to join his deck crew as a deckhand for the season. I have accepted his offer and I shall move onboard from the 1st of February(next Monday).
|
I would like to thank everyone on this mail who've assisted me in my yachting journey, I have made it this far because of you and your support, I wish to see everyone back in SA and give my thanks in person. It was a bumpy start to my career and I couldn't have chosen a better time to kickstart my career than a global pandemic(haha).

GRUNTERS LEFT HEADLESS BY SEAL
|
|
|
|
|
|
From observations from the footage, videos and pictures, it appeared that the seal was in the bay feeding and it was chasing a school of Grunter in the shallows, he would bite them on the head, shake them around and then just leave the body. By biting the head he avoided the spines on the Grunter.
|
Seals are very intelligent mammals so they learn to adapt to any sort of environment. So when feeding they have their preferences too, so they eat certain parts of the fish only, we can assume that the bloody parts and the head has a lot vitamins and nutrients that they look for and not necessarily the body of the fish itself.

Another fantastic day’s racing and Eish gets a bloody nose.
|
|
On Saturday, two back to back races were organized – an around the cans race, the finish time of which was the starting time for the medium distance race around Bakoven rock and back. It was brilliant to see a great fleet of 18 boats entered and the racing was close and fun. The faster boats quickly put some space between themselves and the rest of the fleet, with Alegria, Maker’s Mark, Big Boat and Sir Henry well on their way into the second race by the time the smaller boats finished the first. The race for first on handicap was still wide open though, with Hamba, Firefly, Jasper, Scottische, Smidgin and Bonnie Lass all in the mix.

As expected, the reach up to Bakoven was a fruit salad of big gusts and calms. As Eish rounded Bakoven, a big gust struck us, the bridle holding our forestay parted and down came the mast. Fortunately a couple of halyards kept out of the way ahead of the mast held it at about 45%. Linda and I scrambled to keep it from coming all the way down while dropping the main and securing the halyards to the front of the boat – eventually, with tremendous relief, we managing to winch the mast back to the vertical.

The NSRI were there at incredibly short notice and a couple of guys came on board, helped us furl the flogging jib and kept us excellent company on the rather laborious chug back to the safety of the club.
|
|
A big thanks to Richard Sissons for calling in as it happened, to Rob and Jeremy on Compromise and all the other yachts that passed for checking we were okay. A special thanks to the NSRI for the quick assistance – it’s hugely reassuring to know you are there!

MYKONOS OFFSHORE - POSTPONED
|
|
The Mykonos Offshore is the favourite event of the year for most of us. Rather than cancel it next month, we have decided to postpone the race to the weekend of Sat 24 and Sun 25 April. Hopefully the state of the Covid pandemic will allow us to run a successful event that weekend. Tuesday the 27th of April is a public holiday allowing you to bring your boat back on the Monday or Tuesday. Club Mykonos will shift any accommodation bookings you have made to that weekend.

A few ideas for the "FUN SAILING WEEKEND" always weather permitting.

Details will be confirmed 10 days before the proposed "FUN SAILING WEEKEND"
|
1. Saturday cruise – anchor night off Simons Town beach, beach braai, Sunday cruise
2. Saturday rally to Hout Bay overnight Sunday return
3. Saturday rally to Gordons Bay overnight Sunday return (harbour depth permitting)
4. Invite dinghies from Imperial to join us, swop crews boats etc.
5. Swop crew Weekend. Skippers enter, crew drawn from a hat and allocated accordingly
6. Invite to Imperial and Zeekovlei to crew on our boats to gain experience
7. Invite the navy weekend to sail with us.

The cruising groups intention is to improve communication and share with fellow sailors who may not be involved or have an interest in the club's racing WhatsApp group. The objective is to grow the active community of sailors at the club and use this as a platform for sharing joint sailing excursions whether it be for an afternoon raft up braai off Longbeach or an overnight crossing to Gordon's Bay. Sailors are encouraged to share your planned sailing trips, experiences and ideas on the group, there will additionally be planned cruise events arranged by club sailing in coming months.
