How to explain sailing -

Sailing Report

Wednesday 04 April - Autumn Twilight Series Race 5 of 10. A South Easter wind was blowing 25 - 30 knots, it looked like it was going to be a blow out. Sailors sat out on the deck debating whether or not to go out, with just 20 minutes to the start they all decided to brave the winds and head out to the start line. 6 boats entered and finished the race in less than an hour.

1st - Illusion
2nd - Firefly
3rd - Apple Pie

Saturday 07 April - RTC Series 2 Race 3 of 4. Could not have asked for a better sailing day with a gentle North Westerly breeze and blues skies. We had 6 boats out on the water. The fleets finishing times ranged from 1 hour 15 minutes to nearly 2 hours however there were just 11 seconds between first and second place on corrected time.

1st - Pure Magic
2nd - Garmin Fiesta
3rd - Bonnie Lass

Discover Scuba

This year’s dive festival will once again have a PADI DSD (discover scuba diving) program to run alongside the regular festival dives. With the help of local PADI Instructors and dive schools we aim to get 100 DSDs done over the 2 days of the festival and thereby introduce 100 new scuba divers to Cape Town diving. The cost of a festival DSD is only R200 (it’s normally around R1 000) or R100 for scholars or it’s free to FBYC members. All the equipment you need is included.

We will start running DSD groups at 9am on the Sat & Sun of the festival with small groups and their instructor getting kitted-up and heading out every few minutes.

To book a DSD spot please contact our DSD co-ordinators Sarah and Steve at Dive Action info@diveaction.co.za or phone (021) 511 0800 or phone or WhatsApp 082 881 1660.

FBYC Sailing Trophies

Trophies -
Dave Staniforth has been busy between his sailing days during the strong South Easters. Here is what he has been up to.

A digital catalogue of the 85 FBYC sailing trophies is being put together. Returning members, Dave & Vicki Staniforth, have been working over the past months with Sailing Manager Linsay Oberholtzer, to photograph and record the past winners of each of the trophies. The oldest trophy, the Argo Cup, dates back to 1962. The most prolific winner is long-standing member Billy Leisegang who is closing on a century of trophy wins having first won back in 1975.

Dave commented "We have really enjoyed the time doing this task - something to do whilst the South Easter is blowing! It has brought back many fine memories of my youth crewing on other member's boats in the 70s and then skippering the family Buccaneer Shannon and Vicki sailing with her Dad on Scottische."

The trophy catalogue will be published on the club website in due course.

This will ensure that access control is managed seamlessly, at all points in the club. Crow’s Nest discount offered from 05 Mar 2018 is working well. Please show your electronic membership card when making purchases at the bar, in order to receive your member discount. Send an electronic ID photo to Teresa info@fbyc.co.za if you do not have the electronic card yet.

2. The National Treasury has officially increased VAT from 14% to 15% as of 1 April 2018. As our services are subject to VAT, there will be an adjustment to your membership fee and any variable invoices on services rendered.
