Gary passed away from Covid19 in Guatemala whilst on his round the world cruise on their yacht Mystic Blue. His wife, Angela, is recovering from Covid19.

A message in Memoriam
|
|
|
It was with sadness that we heard of the passing of Bryne Fisher-Jeffes. We first met him some 40+ years ago, when his recently built Galadrial joined the Flamenca fleet. It was at the time when FBYC was moving from the old bus sheds to the current location on the foreshore. In that era, much of the improvement work was undertaken by willing club members and Bryne was one who gave of his time (and more than most). In more recent years, he was to show the same drive and determination in establishing Cape Coastal Rowing Club at FBYC.

Bryne was a wily competitor in the Flamenca class and the FBYC trophy catalogue records his 16 race wins during the 80s.
|
|
|
During the WP or National Class Championships Galadrial would always have one or two excellent races which invariably affected the overall standings of the top 3 skippers, much to their chagrin. When not racing many hours were spent sailing and socialising on Mauritius 43 Tempest, at anchor off Miller's Point, or afterwards on the mooring in Simon's Bay.

In the past decade, as we have returned more often to visit family in the Cape, it was always great to reconnect with Bryne. He was a great source of the latest happenings around the club and his passion for coastal rowing shone through. It was also good to reminisce about the characters of past years over a beer in the Crow's Nest. Bryne will be sorely missed and we offer our deepest condolences to all his family and close friends.

CCRC friendship tour 2021
|
During October Cape Coastal Rowing Club finally welcomed back our 12 overdue German tour friends from Oldenburger Ruderverrein Club.
|
|
|
|
|
|
Off we went with three trailers packed to the hilt with three quads, five doubles - 25 rowing seats and 30 heads on pillows.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Our new Eastern Cape tour destinations - a welcome first for our foreign friends and many of us, plus our friends from Vikings Rowing Club. It brought great fun and new eyes for the spectacular scenery in this beautiful part of our country.
|
We spent eight nights away, in preparation and receiving our guests in Port Elizabeth at the start of their 14-day tour.
|
|
Kenton on Sea delivered a multitude of highlights on the Kariega and Bushman's Rivers, with game viewing and superb hospitality from all the locals.
|
Favourable weather conditions remained for our two Kowie river journeys. The second, on a sad yet perfect day to spread our flowers at the Halyards yacht basin in Port Alfred.
|
|
With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to our dear friend, no-nonsense boatman, superb rower, and joker of note, the late Bryne Fisher-Jeffes.
|
The good old Pig and Whistle in Bathurst treated us well before moving on to the banks of the magnificent Keurbooms river at Forever Resort in Plettenberg Bay. Another highlight and great joy for our visitors was the 10km hike in the Robberg Nature Reserve along this spectacular coastline.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
A contented CCRC club and fleet headed home as our guests continued their journey via the Klein Karoo and Route 62, before joining us in Simon's Town for the last three days of their tour.
Thanks to the success of their second SA tour, we now have another invitation for our second friendship tour to Germany.
|
Huge gratitude goes to our tour committee, so professionally managed and executed with perfection by Pieter Coetzer, together with Derrick Read and Anna-Marie Smith by his side.
|
|
The luckiest organisers, with a more than a fantastic team of towers, supporters, partners, spouses, and our own Captain doctor. Not only before, but during, and after the tour. Well done everybody, you truly outdid yourselves!
|

Lastly, our job would not be done without sharing these heart-felt words written for Bryne by coach master and close friend Derrick who, with Allison Read, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with us that day on the Kowie River.
|
|
|
|
|
|
'A very sad day saying goodbye to Bryne today in Port Alfred. A small wreath of red Hibiscus flowers in the coxn’s seat of his beloved Tata. We all tossed beautiful freshly picked Hibiscus flowers and the wreath into the calm bay at the Halyards, where tears rolled as the breeze embraced the flowers and blessed them off into our memories.
|
Bryne, you gave life to Cape Coastal Rowing Club from the very first day when Daggie towed Vince and Harry into the Naval Dockyard. With a simple cry for help, you brought bolts and tools to rig the boats till after dark without even knowing who you were helping.
|
Coastal was in your blood and without your passion and love for these crafts that tamed the bay and made rowing possible, Cape Coastal would never have been born.
|
|
|
Bryne, you helped build an amasing club from two “ acquired” boats and reject oars, where innovation and maintenance meant survival and growth. You found the truth in giving - pays back a hundredfold, and to your last days, you gave to ensure a fleet of boats would epitomise your love of these coastal rowing boats and the club you nurtured.
|
Bryne, you generated such a wonderful energy that brought so much love and respect for you, a handful of a character, so complex and caring, but loved and respected for being Bryne, innovative, skilled, loving, difficult, principled, daring, nightmare to a committee,
|
But always true to a club that cared for you.
Rest In Peace Bryne.'

A fun day of sailing was had by all competitors that took part in the Seamanship Race this past weekend. Seven boats entered. They each had to put in a reef, shack it out, complete a 360-degree turn, heave to, and finally do a man overboard drill, between marks. Some boats were better than others but generally, everyone did well. For those that couldn’t make it, I suggest that you start practicing for the next one.
