SAILING

Picture-2
Once again the South Easter claimed a race, that being the last of the Summer Twilight Series 1 Race 6.

We held our first Club RTC Series over the weekend of 15 – 16 January. What an event with a wet bridge start! Steve Casey and I braved the elements and sat out on the bridge boat in the heat. We managed to get in four races and the competitors seemed to have great sailing/fun. Tony, surname not mentioned, made the Springbok swimming team.

That brought us to the first race in the PAINTSMITHS LONGBEACH Summer Twilight Series 2. Fourteen boats joined in and although the very unpredictable wind proved to be a challenge, we completed the race.

The Double Handed Series Race 1 was held on Saturday 22 January. Again, the very unpredictable wind conditions made for some interesting sailing, to say the least. Out of twelve boats six retired and we had six finishers.

SAILING FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS

Wednesday 26th January – PAINTSMITHS LONGBEACH Summer Twilight Series 2 Race 2.
Saturday 30th January - Medium Distance Series Race 1.
Wednesday 2nd February – PAINTSMITHS LONGBEACH Summer Twilight Series 2 Race 3.
Saturday 5 / Sunday 6 February – Club Racing / Cruising Weekend. This means that there will either be a race or if the weather is looking good, I may arrange a cruise and possible raft up at a predetermined destination, so look out for this one.

Paintsmiths Noordhoek

A big thank you to PAINTSMITHS LONGBEACH for their continued support of our club.

With the waters at IYC being condemned and no sailing allowed, it’s been great to see them using our waters as an alternative. We welcome them with open arms.

ROWING

CAPE COASTAL ROWING CLUB

Off to a good start says Commodore Sasha Planting!
Beautiful weather! That is what the year 2022 has brought rowers and paddlers alike. Of course, the glorious days are interspersed with bouts of South Easter ... which suits downwind paddlers and restricts rowers to the Bay, but we're not complaining.

The year holds much promise, not the least of which is the easing up of the Covid pandemic.

We have an adventure-filled calendar for the year, kicking off with a comedy and auction fundraiser, a fun regatta in February, a tour up the West Coast in March and the epic Robben Island Freedom Paddle in April with more thereafter.

In between we are out in our boats, enjoying the magnificent coastline and hoping for sightings of sunfish, sharks, humpback whales and other extraordinary creatures.

In February/March our Lawhill rowing programme will commence, and we are always ready and willing to teach beginners keen to learn to row.

See you on the water!

More about Mark Sampson

Mark Sampson was founder of the Cape Comedy Collective in 1999, mentoring Loyiso Gola, Riaad Moosa, Kurt Schoonraad, Kagiso Lediga, Nik Rabinowitz and many others before MC’ing the CCC show at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003.

He toured three solo stand-up shows to theatres nationally and was the top-selling comedian at the Grahamstown Festival from 2005-11. Before he left to go Africa Clockwise, he performed at COP17 in Durban for the EU, hosted the world’s largest sustainability conference and launched the City of Cape Town’s Climate Smart Campaign. In 2016 he was voted best presenter at the 18th SAASTEC Conference (SA Association of Science and Technology Centres) in KZN.
FBYC-ROWING-1
In 2013, the Sampson family left Cape Town to drive clockwise around Africa on waste vegetable oil.

Six and a half years, 38 countries and 47000km later, their Big Green Truck became the first carbon-neutral vehicle to circumnavigate the continent without using fossil fuels.

"SA's funniest stand-up comedian by some distance" The Star

"It’s stand-up comedy at its finest, a man with something to say and a fabulous way of saying it." Daily Maverick.
FBYC-ROWING-3
Mark will entertain the crowd with his hilarious comedy show, and host an auction, the first of its kind for CCRC, in support of the Lawhill Maritime Centre’s developmental rowing and sailing programmes, as well as upgrading of the large CCRC green container, and purchase of water shoes for our 2022 students.

Come and join us for a much-needed laugh, as Sampson puts the fun back into fundraising with this evening of family-friendly entertainment!

NB - we are looking for 10 quality items / donations to go on auction. Please support!
