HELDERBERG ACADEMY VISIT

A word from Rozanne Gordon, Director at Helderberg Academy:

I want to take a moment from the Academy's side to thank you all for your amazing efforts and contribution to this incredible experience for the kids, we are so so grateful.

The Helderberg Academy is a non-profit organization that works with the young girls and boys in the communities of Lwandle, Macassar and Sir Lowry’s Pass. We teach whole life coaching through sport, namely Rugby, Netball and soccer, we also host them for holiday clubs and beach trips during school holidays.

Our hope is to develop a leadership program within the academy that will further nurture these amazing youngsters and allow them to believe in great futures for themselves.

Our experience on Saturday was absolutely amazing, notwithstanding the two youngsters that couldn’t quite catch their sea legs on the boat trip, we were privileged enough to see dolphins on the way, which was my personal highlight.
What was so impressive was the tour of the Simonstown NSRI’s Facilities and incredible brand new rescue vessel. What a privilege to stand inside and receive detailed descriptions and insight as to how it all works and what goes into rescue efforts. Just incredible.

Once again, Thank you so much to all involved, I know this is an unforgettable experience for all of us.

Golden Globe 2022 - KIRSTEN NEUSCHAFER

FBYC is pleased to host a presentation at 19h30 on Wed 2nd March after Wed night racing by Kirsten Neuschafer, who together with FBYC’s Jeremy Bagshaw, is one of South Africa’s 2 entrants in the 2022 Golden Globe non-stop solo round-the-world race.

Kirsten hails from Gqeberha (PE) and has been sailing dinghies since her childhood, but since 2006 has been sailing professionally. From sail training to sailboat deliveries, she has built a diverse set of skills and experience.

Kirsten’s longest single-handing was a delivery from Portugal to South Africa with only a windvane as self-steering, on an old and maintenance-intensive 32-foot ferro-cement sloop.

In 2015, she began working for Skip Novak on his Pelagic Expeditions to South Georgia, The Antarctic Peninsula, Patagonia and the Falklands.

Kirsten has sailed several film crews south to capture the beauty of the Antarctic. She was featured in the National Geographic series “Wildlife Resurrection Island with Bertie Gregory” as she sailed his crew throughout South Georgia. She also sailed and was a support vessel for several crews from the newest BBC series “Seven Worlds, One Planet” who filmed leopard seal predation of gentoo penguins and albatross behaviour on Bird Island, South Georgia.

Along with sailing, she has enjoyed other solitary adventures. When she was just 22, she cycled from Europe back home to South Africa (15000 km over approximately one year) on her own.

Kirsten will give a presentation on her preparation of her 36 foot Cape George Cutter, Minnehaha, for the Golden Globe race as well on her experience of Antarctic pelagic sailing. Be sure not to miss this!

ROWING

Cape Coastal Rowing Club Beach Regatta on 19 February 2022

Great fun at our first beach Regatta for the year on Saturday! We enjoyed making up mixed crews with our counterparts from Alfred and Elgin Rowing Clubs, as well as our students from Lawhill Maritime Institute and visitors from Port Alfred and Millerton.

What a bunch of sporty participants! From the crew planners to organisers laying out the course, with Geoffrey and the FBYC club buoys, to loud cheering from the beach.

Couldn't have wished for any better conditions, nor a better home base for the traditional boerie braai and celebrations.

Thanks all for making the first event on our calendar a roaring success!
All of us at CCRC.
