Golden Globe

The pre-race (SITraN Challenge Race) from Gijon, Spain to LeSables D’Olonne, France, across the Bay of Biscay saw Damien Guillou (FRA) come in first, followed by Simon and Nikki Curwen (UK) and Kirsten Neuschafer (RSA) in third. In this race the boats were allowed to have a second crew and could also use their engines. When we asked Jeremy Bagshaw how he did, he had this to say;
“It’s hard to say! I was the only one that didn’t use my motor! So, if there was a racing class, maybe I won it but if we were allowed to use motors as part of the race, I probably came around 10th. It seems it was more an opportunity to get us all to be at sea at the same time to test safety, communication, gear, radios and satphones etc.”
We wish Jeremy all the very best for the race, which starts on Sunday 4th September.

With the 2022 AGM behind us, we’re delighted to announce our new committee.
But first, a big thank you to each loyal serving member over the past two years. Special thanks to our two retiring committee members, Sasha Planting – ex Commodore and FBYC representative, and Anna-Marie Smith – ex Tours, Communications, and Social Media. Both to continue their LMI coaching on Fridays and Saturdays, thank you!
No doubt that many a COVID curve ball was thrown at us, including loss of income due to cancelled international tours. Still, the club produced a healthy set of books mostly due to the exceptional efforts of Pieter Coetzer and our tour committee and members, with income derived from our German visiting tour last year.
Prospects galore on the cards for 2022/23, to be announced by our new committee: Commodore – Estelle Wiid Captain – Peter Goosen Vice-Captain – Thato Mabelane Coach Master – Derrick Read
Finance - Ivan Heesom-Green Boats and Maintenance – Kobus Huisamen together with his ever-present sub-committee Secretary – Cath Greenwood (Welcome back!)

Great news of the arrival of 14 new life jackets complying with international safety standards for our Lawhill rowing students. A huge sigh of relief for our coaches who without fail, will exercise the compulsory wearing of these from the slip, to the water. Thank you, Anna-Marie, for nagging enough, Debbie Owen for the support, and Captain Pete Goosen for coming to the party through the corporate social sponsorship of his company Patterson & Cooke. We are grateful!
On a high note, we will leave for our annual flower tour with 17 seats and 28 pillows booked to Langebaan on Friday afternoon, two quads, four doubles, and a single scull in tow. We appreciate our kind towers, spouses, and land diens supporters who will fetch and carry us from Kraalbaai around to Postberg Reserve to see the flowers.
And so, with no further ado, I shall hand over the pen to Thato Mabelane who will keep you entertained in great style from here! 😊
Keep going forward, Anna-Marie And all of us at CCRC

Conservation and the FBYC

We are fortunate to live on a coast with an abundance of natural resources. Many of us take this for granted, but a trip to Europe or the East should quickly remind us that the waters of False Bay present a spectacle of marine life.
Unfortunately, False Bay is not immune to the problems which have decimated the seas in other parts of the world. Pollution, over-fishing and the spread of alien species have all made their mark in False Bay, and a number of local species are now threatened. Simon's Town is home to a few species listed in the IUCN Red Data list and the CITES list, which indicates their vulnerability. We even have some threatened fish species swimming among our moorings.
When out on the bay, one regularly spots illegal activities, such as poaching in the Marine Protected Areas.
Several areas in False Bay are designated as off-limits to fishermen, primarily to allow fish life to recover and also to protect important dive sites.
The closest of these are the reefs around Roman Rock Light and the area to the south of it. Roman Rock, and the majority of what is called as Castor Rock on the SAN chart, is inside a no-fishing area.
A line drawn due south (true) from the tall building in Muizenberg (easily visible from Simon's Town) is the eastern limit of this area, and provides an easy reference.
Detailed co-ordinates of this and other areas are available on the angling noticeboard.
With mountain lookouts and a fast boat, SANP have the ability to respond fairly quickly to calls.

Please separate wood, metals, plastic, etc to make it easier for the person who has to off-load at the dump.
Liquor licence
The club has an on-consumption liquor licence therefore members and their guests may not bring their own liquor onto the club premises, as this is regarded as an offence in terms of the Liquor Act.
We have reviewed the corkage fee facility and it will not be available in the Crow’s Nest Bar upstairs any longer.
The facility will still be available when you are ordering from the restaurant downstairs. Arrangements to pay corkage can be set up with Carl when you want to bring your own wines for a function, provided that the wine is not already on the wine list.
