SAILING NEWS

Golden Globe

After passing the waypoint off Cape Town Jeremy Bagshaw, on his yacht Olleana, came to FBYC and attached to a swing mooring to carry out some much-needed bottom cleaning.
He was here for about 24hrs. He was welcomed in by over 10 boats. It was great to see him. He is in good spirits and is looking forward to completing the race. With the growth under his boat now gone, he has reported that his boat is going much faster and is now making very good progress. Jeremy recorded the best four-hour record. He is currently in 5th place with only 17,125 Nautical Miles to go.

After Jeremy’s stopover, Elliott Smith arrived and went on the same swing mooring as Jeremy had. He came in to repair a broken bowsprit. Thanks to all the people that gave him advice. He was very grateful and truly enjoyed his stay. He said that he would love to come back and visit. He made the necessary repairs and is back in the race. We wish him well.
The other, South African entrant Kirsten Neuschafer is currently in 2nd place with only 16,068 Nautical Miles to go and is breaking all sorts of GGR records. Best speed over 4 hours (9.8 knots), best 24-hour distance (218.9 miles) and best distance over seven days (1143.7 miles).

If you want to follow the Race, you can download the YB Races app, and search for the Golden Globe Race 2022.

Yacht Grot

FBYC hosted a Yacht Grot on Saturday 26th November.

Although not very well attended, a few people got to sell their unwanted boating gear/equipment and there was many a bargain to be had.

The Biggest Sailing event in Africa (FBYC Sail Past)

This year is South African Sailing (SAS) 75th Anniversary.

They would like to celebrate this by trying to get as many boats as possible on the water. FBYC, as one of the host clubs, is planning a sail past the coast to meet up with boats setting off from Gordons Bay Yacht Club.

The date will be, any day between 16 – 19 December. We’ll choose one of these dates with the best weather.
Let’s see how many boats we can get out there. Power, Paddling and Rowing Boats are encouraged to join in.

The Sail Past will be followed by a Bring & Braai. So far, we have 34 boats entered. Please watch this space for more information. Entry forms and Crew Lists are available at the Sailing Office.
You can get information about SAS’s Anniversary by visiting https://www.sailing.org.za/events/139351/

SADSAA logo
Please note that the SADSAA Safety and Admin Offices will be closing for the period 16th December 2022 until the 2nd January 2023 so that the ladies can take a well-deserved break over the holidays.

We advise all Safety Officers and Examiners to get their orders for Safety books as well as any Skippers' Applications in by the 1st of December 2022. There are always delays with the couriers in December, so it is best to avoid the problem if possible.

Liquor licence

The club has an on-consumption liquor licence therefore members and their guests may not bring their own liquor onto the club premises, as this is regarded as an offence in terms of the Liquor Act. We have reviewed the corkage fee facility and it will not be available in the Crow’s Nest Bar upstairs any longer.

The facility will still be available when you are ordering from the restaurant downstairs. Arrangements to pay corkage can be set up with Carl when you want to bring your own wines for a function, provided that the wine is not already on the wine list.
