March has been a busy month for the Cape Coastal rowers, kicking off with an adventure up the West Coast led by intrepid explorers Derrick Reed, Pieter Coetzer, Pete Thompson, and Ivan Heesom-Green in two double sculls.
The objective was to familiarise the club with new coastal rowing locations, ahead of a visit from a Dutch touring party in October. As the ancient explorers must have discovered, if you can make it through the breaking waves, rock-infested waters, and Atlantic swell, there are some fine sheltered places to row. However, we are not certain that it would be wise to test the ever-changing mood of the Atlantic coastline with Dutch visitors!
Ahead of the March 21st and Heritage Day long weekend, 20 rowers and their spouses headed off for a weekend of rowing on the Goukou River in Stillbaai, one of our favourite touring destinations.
The weather was fine, the water flat and our new members and beginner rowers got a real sense of what long-distance rowing is all about. It’s not all about the rowing, however.
The weekend was filled with braaing, wine and olive tasting at our favourite accommodation spot, Oudewerfskloof on the West Bank, with general camaraderie and merriment the order of the day.
The month also saw us close off our first term of rowing with our students from the Lawhill Maritime Centre. We have about 12 rowers who join us on Fridays, Saturdays, and at our infrequent regattas. Having started rowing in Grade 10, they have become remarkably proficient and have proven resilient – choosing to row come rain or shine.
Term 2 sees us introduce the grade 10’s to the sport, which inevitably brings with it a few adventures.
All for the love of rowing!
