SAILING NEWS

Golden Globe

Congratulations to the South African entrant Kirsten Neuschafer, who made history by becoming the first South African and first woman to win the Golden Globe Yacht Race. She had to battle Abhilash Tomy over the last week but came out on top.

We are all so proud of her truly astonishing accomplishment.
FBYC is also very proud of our entry, Jeremy Bagshaw on his yacht Olleana, who is still making good progress and doing so well. He remains in 2nd place in the Chichester Class, with only 2,260 Nautical Miles to go. Go Jeremy!
If you want to follow the Race, you can download the YB Races app, and search for the Golden Globe Race 2022.

GBYC Raid

GBYC decided to raid our club over the long weekend. Over eight boats arrived and FBYC put on a fantastic Pirate Party to entertain them. Much fun was had by all that attended. Well done to the entertainment committee for putting this on at such short notice.

Optimists

You will notice a few Optimists at FBYC over the next few months. They are the SA Team, practicing for the World Championships, to held in Spain later this year.

ROWING

Trust, Faith and Commitment

Freedom Day saw the Cape Coastal Rowers heading out to Granger Bay to participate in the annual 30km Prescient Freedom Paddle around Robben Island and back. The race was originally designed for surf skiers but is now open to any craft that is paddled – including SUPs, prones and kayaks.
It is the fourth time that CCRC has entered and while we have encountered a variety of weather conditions, Thursday took the cake. A 20-knot northwester, 3-metre swells, intermittent squalls and poor visibility made for challenging conditions.

The race organisers scratched the short course – a 10km route along the coast – to the disappointment of our social rowers and those who had opted to row the youlette, CCRC’s quad which is not suited to rowing around the island.
In addition, four out of five of our doubles competing in the long course scratched. Thus the intrepid crew of Tata - Pete Thomson and Derrick Read, Pete Goosen, Ivan Heesom-Green and Estelle Wiid, and in the double, Kobus Huisamen and Peet Botma (who plans to row the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in December) were left to fly the CCRC flag.

The race organisers were worried about conditions on the NW of the island and requested that the rowers row to the harbour and back, rather than around the island. CCRC was up for the challenge, but courtesy and respect saw the rowers concede to this. (As it turns out the race organisers had their hands full rescuing various paddlers).

And what a race it was. The boats were awash with water for the duration, waves were breaking over the bows and more than once, Derrick in the bow, as well as Kobus and Peet in the double, were airborne as the boats went over the edge of a giant wave. At one point the rain was coming down so hard that Estelle, who coxed part of the way, could not see the island – a little alarming considering dodging container ships is part of the thrill.

But there came a point in the race when the rowers forgot about the waves, the mountainous swell, the rain and at times nausea, and settled into a silent rhythm where nothing mattered but momentum and timing. As Derrick said later, it was trust, faith and commitment that brought the crews together.

It took two hours to reach the harbour, at an average of 7km/hour, and 1hr.40 to return – at an average speed of 9km/hour. The double completed the route in 3hr50. For context, the quad has previously completed the course in 3h15, while our fastest double has completed the route in 2h44.

This was definitely one for the memory books and we will be back for more next year!
