Changemakers
Lawhill Maritime Academy, with the enthusiastic support of Cape Coastal Rowing, recently had the pleasure of hosting two renowned figures in US rowing, Arshay Cooper and Kevin Harris. Cooper and Harris are true agents of change, and upon hearing their remarkable stories, Lawhill's head, Debbie Owen, was determined that they should visit Cape Town to share their inspirational stories with the students at Lawhill. It took her two years – but she succeeded.
Cooper was the captain of the first all-black high school rowing team in the US. That sounds unremarkable until one learns that the high school was in West Chicago, a low income area riven with drugs and gangsterism. By the age of 12 most kids had witnessed a shooting, or lost a close friend or relative to gun violence. Joining a gang was key to survival, and provided a sense of belonging, sadly lacking in the community. But it was also usually a one-way ticket to drug addiction, jail or early death. Then in the 1990s a crazy white guy decided to start a rowing club at the school. His initial effort was met with derision. “We are black, we don’t like water and we sure as hell don’t wear lycra,” Cooper told us recently, to much laughter. But the guy was determined and eventually recruited a core team - one that went on to race together over three seasons – changing the face of US rowing in the process. Their story is documented in the movie A Most Beautiful Thing, which had its South African premiere at the Labia Theatre with Cooper and Harris in attendance.

It’s noteworthy, not because it’s a movie about rowing. Rather it’s a movie about the trauma of violence and cyclical poverty, and how the unexpected safety – and sense of belonging – that these youngsters found on the water enabled them to change their lives. They were not friends and were even from rival gangs, but they learned that to move a boat they had to work as one. Their story is not rosy or romantic and there are no perfect endings, but it documents a triumph over adversity.
For his part, Harris has been coaching rowing in the US for over 30 years and was the first black coach to bring a rowing team to national champs. He, too, understands that rowing is not about competition, but about bringing people together under one common theme and giving them a platform to reach their full potential. Their few days in Cape Town were action-packed. Aside from launching the movie, they were present to witness the christening of Lawhill’s six brand new rowing machines, a donation from the manufacturer Concept2, and to provide some instruction. They also cheered our young rowers on during their Saturday rowing session – a wild and windy day. And they were present as guests of honour to name our two boats – Tata and Lawhill – which were acquired with Lotto funding. It was a wonderful, uplifting time, much needed at present. And, it should be said, that the inspiration was not one-directional. For Cooper and Harris, it was their first visit to ‘the mother continent’ and the sight of the Lawhill students singing their beautiful version of Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika had the pair up on their feet, swaying, clapping, and smiling – no doubt all the way home.
Kudos go to Debbie Owen for pulling this off. She’s a legend too.
