Jeremy Bagshaw on his yacht Olleana, crossed the Finish Line on the 9th June after 278 days at sea.
The G°G°R race started on the 4th of September 2022 in Les Sables d’ Olonne (France) and the sailors had to pass through specified gates in Trindad (Canary Islands), Cape Town (South Africa) and Hobart (Australia), finishing back in Les Sables d’ Olonne (France). Jeremy suffered several setbacks and endured all sorts of weather, from being becalmed to massive storms, especially around the infamous Cape Horn.
Unfortunately, Jeremy was forced to take his boat out of the water in Australia, which sent him out of the main G°G°R and into the Chichester Class. The Chichester Class is for yachts that had to make a stop rather than completing the race non-stop. His sheer grit and determination however saw him to the finish line in second place in the class. Only five out of the sixteen starters managed to complete the 30,000 nautical mile race.

In the words of our Commodore, David Saul:
“From the moment Jeremy set sail on this epic journey, our intrepid sailor showcased unwavering determination, resilience, and unyielding spirit with each passing day. He navigated treacherous waters, faced tempestuous storms, and braved the relentless solitude of the open sea. Jeremy’s unwavering commitment to conquering the unknown serves as an inspiration to us all.
As a member of FBYC, he epitomises the values of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and a love for the sea. His journey was not his alone, it was a testament to the support and encouragement from our close-knit community. His triumph is a testament to a collective strength and shared passion that binds us together.
Jeremy’s accomplishment, in completing this solo race around the world, is a shining example of what can be achieved when one’s dream is coupled with relentless dedication.
Jeremy’s story will forever be etched in the annals of our club’s history, serving as a beacon of inspiration for future generations of sailors.
FBYC is very proud of you and your accomplishment.

Despite wild storms, Cape Coastal Rowers braved the elements
Despite the tumultuous weather in recent weeks, a group of resilient Cape Coastal Rowers fearlessly ventured out into wild waters. Their motivation stemmed not only from their love of rowing but also from the desire to provide training opportunities for George du Plooy, a member of UCT's rowing squad. George has been selected to compete in the Africa Beach Sprints regatta in Tunisia from the 24th to the 26th as part of the South African Coastal Rowing team, thus necessitating rigorous practice sessions.
While many sought refuge indoors, George embarked on a fast and challenging endurance row, navigating through choppy waters to reach the wreck and on to the quarry. The training included practicing racing turns around the Glencairn buoy, beach landings, and even a sprint or two.
With George's remarkable athleticism, we hold great expectations for his performance and that of the entire South African team!

Pisces Divers Clean-Up
On Saturday, the 17th of June, Pisces Divers did a Dive clean-up and Mike has sent us a breakdown of what was collected...
We collected 85kg of debris
The most interesting item was a Nedbank credit card (not working!), a diving mask, very crusty sunglasses and then the usual plastic, cans, bottles, rope, etc. We found a 4m 50mm pipe as well.
We are grateful to Pisces and the Dive Team!
