AN UPDATE FROM LUTHO THOMAS
(YOUTH SAILOR)
It is almost that of year where the summer charter season is about start. It has been a busy month filled with interesting activities in between.
As mentioned in the previous email, foiling was on the cards for April and foiling we went. Unfortunately Colin couldn’t attend the course with me(he was afraid I’d out sail him on the foils😅) just joking! He had already attended the course a couple of years back so he offered his spot to Brendon, boat Captain of Quantum Racing. It was a good 3 days spent in Mar Menor near Murcia, big “salt lake” really, it’s one of the spot where most of the Americans Cup guys have learnt how to foil and also where they train off season.
Foiling is unreal, everything you know about sailing a dinghy at high performance is just inverted. We some good conditions for the course, from Beaufort Wind Scale 0 to about 3 or 4. In the light stuff I managed to get the hull out of the water(because I weigh nothing compared to the boat, I weigh less than the boat) The pictures I attached are from when we had some good breeze and I was sending it on the foils with about maximum height, on the foils you don’t need to hike as much but for me I had to, with a full main and code 0.
The next day when I got back Colin decided I didn’t have enough sailing from the weekend and he sent me sailing on one of our Melges we have onboard past the old Alinghi sailing base in Valencia⛵️They used to participate in the Americans Cup back in the days.
Things have been going well, learning a lot as we’re heading into season and I’ve attached a photo of what I’d look like when I’d be out of my painting or varnishing uniform. I have a couple of more years to collect my stripes. On that note I am currently studying for Celestial Yachtmaster Exam which I plan on taking late this year or early next year before we start the next season, then thereafter start preparing for my Officer of the Watch for 2023. I’ve had some time in the bridge as we were heading to Barcelona from Valencia, had a couple of lessons from Colin and the Chief Mate.
I’ll leave it here for now as I have get some sleep before we depart Barcelona into the open waters of the Mediterranean.”
Yours in Yachting Lutho Thomas

The CCRC team once again rose to the Freedom Paddle Challenge on Freedom Day last Monday.
Much preparation made for a momentous occasion. All seven boats who entered completed the race without incident but with cold frosties in hand made to celebrate a joyous finish.
A privilege of note to participate in this iconic event, some for the second time, but this year in superb conditions beyond expectation. Excellent organisation initiated by Captain Estelle Wiid and committee, combined with the support boat and photographer organised by club member Mandi Vickers, has left us with a great experience and memories to treasure.
Big congratulations to all our rowers, your preparation paid off! Ladies sea quad on Tata - Coxswain Bryne Fisher-Jeffes, Thato Mbalane, Estelle Wiid, Mandi Vickers, and Sandra Kotze.
Loud applause to our Single Sculler Kobus Huisamen for his awesome row in perfectly straight lines, and in excellent time. Kobus, you showed us all how it's done - back to front - the first single scull to round the island in the Freedom Challenge 2021, on Freedom Day!
Age handicaps in doubles made for captivating stories, with Chris Hale at 25 and Peter Thompson at 78 years of age, coming in first at just below three hours.
Special congrats to our formidable Legends father and son team, Nick and John Bothma at 85 years of age, we salute the pair of you! Club Commodore Sasha Planting and Pieter Coetzer doubled like stars, so did Ivan Heesom Green with John Watermeyer, and Anna-Marie Smith with Trevor Robinson in the company of surfskis and support boats all the way.
Sincere thanks goes to the Precient Freedom Paddle 2021 organisers, our club family, and every supporter.
