ROWING

Cape Coastal Rowing Club News

Belated congratulations to our SA Masters Rower, Peter Thompson (78 years) who recently joined CCRC after a long flat water rowing career in Gauteng and White River. More famously, are Peter’s past and recent accolades at the SA Master’s fine boat rowing competition two weeks ago at Roodeplaat Dam, near Pretoria.

Peter competed in the second division (above 55 years) in a coxed VIII (sweep oar boat), where he was placed 2nd, and moved to 1st for Gold, based on the age handicap.

He also raced in the winning Coxed Quad (sculling boat) initially placed 3rd that moved to 1st again based on the age handicap. Peter achieved the same performance in the Double scull, with his final victory in the Single scull, won by a few seconds just before his VIII and Quad counterpart, Digby Hoets.

Many a young rower would be inspired by his philosophy that competing, and having fun in a boat with good friends, are one and the same thing. Having recently graduated to ocean rowing, Peter now looks back on his rowing career which started with two years at Cambridge University, followed by informal rowing in his 40’s, and more competitive Masters rowing at Vikings Rowing Club in later years. We are delighted to have you on board and wish you many more years of fantastic sculling voyages on Cape waters.

More great news is that our coaching teams were delighted to welcome the new Grade 10 and 11 students from Lawhill Maritime Centre on Friday and Saturday. We saw a large turnout of students, well organised by CCRC member Alison van Staden, who recently took over from Cath Greenwood, and Debbie Owen at LMC. With students having faced immense CVID challenges during 2020, we look forward to having the Gr 12’s, who only participated in one term of rowing last year, back in our midst shortly.
A big welcome back home to our Vice Captain Pete Goosen, who has been working away in Botswana for over two months.

Last but not least is a big thank you to FBYC and our immediate neighbours the friendly Paddlers, for always making the CCRC family feel so at home on the slip!

See you on the water!
