Angling Report

Fishing report Saturday 24th May (by Jerome skipper of Urisha)
It’s time for a fishing report - I had 3 outings already without reporting . This was my forth outing in 8 days 😂😂😂
So I was up bright & early at 03:45am , got to FBYC at 05:00.
The boat was fueled and iced the previous day .We were 3 onboard and headed out to the point . My 72 year old dad & I had fish during this past week as well , so I just wanted a calm relaxing day on the water to chill and possibly get a fish or 2 .
We caught a few yellowtail at bellows & headed away from the crowd immediately to find our own fish away from the weekend crowd .There was no fireworks .
Water conditions was good with an average temp of 15.3 deg .
We caught a few tail at SW reef and then proceeded to Herold’s bank where some boats were on anchor and catching some tail & snoek . I decided NOT to put down the anchor as I wanted to move and find the shoals and jig for them . I found a few shoals and we caught a few tail on jig . We did not have any bait and we were kindly offered bait by the skipper & crew of Poppies . Nice of them !!! ( They really nice friendly guys on the boat called Poppies )
I did not take the bait as I wanted to find the fish myself and jig on them.
I like to challenge myself as a skipper to be able to find the fish myself & see if we can put a few in the box .
We had to search for the snoek at the bottom. I kept moving and searching until I found a decent piece of snoek .
We then saw some snoek on the western edge of Harold’s bank in the 65m depth . We drop jigs and VAS .
I told the crew to drop with jigs and work on that snoek .
At that stage the snoek rose up and the mass of snoek was dense . All 3 of us onboard were jigging and all our jigs were bitten off simultaneously .
Note- Yes all our jigs are rigged with 1.4m of snoek leader however that shoal was so dense we were still bitten off . I grabbed my no.2 rod and same thing .
So now we are 3 anglers with 4 rods all bitten off by these snoek . We had the shoal below us with no way to catch them . Fortunately I had my 8 snoek handlines ready . We grab the pre- rigged handlines with the lead and the spinners dropped down and Vas !!!! . We quickly managed to pull a few snoek with our lead lines and snoek spinners.
I manage to call the other boats that were still there & they too managed to go vas on that same shoal .
Unfortunately we were unable to keep that snoek there as I have 2 working lines and my crew each with a working line. Nevertheless we were happy to land a few snoek.
We then headed back to bellows at 16:00 and we caught a few tail on the spin .
No real fireworks day , however we still got what we came for !!!!
At 17:00 I said lines up and we ran back to Simon’s Town.
All our fish was extremely well iced and very cold . We vlekked our Snoek on the water .The snoek were in EXCELLENT condition . Flesh was beautiful and most of them had beautiful thick roe .
Once we were back in Port we had job of offloading our few fish and the job of cleaning all those stubborn snoek scales off the boat . We did not mind cleaning those stubborn snoek scales as we were well rewarded.
End of a very satisfy day with 3 happy fishermen onboard .
My dad & I reflected on the day’s fishing whilst driving back home in the Bakkie - We were indeed privileged to have the health and strength to go fishing . We were blessed by the Almighty & we are privileged to enjoy fish we caught ourselves.
Tight lines until next time !!!!!

Congratulations to Geoff Genricks and his crew on Serendipity for their 2nd place overall in this year’s race. They certainly showed determination completing the course in very light winds. Minnie Liebenberg - Temporary Senior Bookkeeper
After a 30+ year corporate career, spanning Finance, Pricing and General Management, I finally realised my lifelong dream of settling in the Western Cape, with my husband, our children and of course our prized procession, our yacht Chadstar.
To be able to live in this beautiful part of South Africa, so close to nature and sail whenever you want to or just spend time on your boat, and from such a superb yacht club as FBYC, is wonderful.
What a privilege it is to work at FBYC and get to know the amazing and enthusiastic staff and hopefully contribute to the club’s success and longevity.
