Angling Report

“It has been a true privilege to help drive the passion for fishing and get FBMT back on the WP board again. A huge thank you to all our participants, your time, effort, and commitment to this sport are deeply appreciated.

Being at the WP Prize Giving on 7th June at Struisbaai Deep Sea Angling Club was an honour. It was incredible to see the strides we’ve taken as a club, and heart-warming to see so many fellow anglers proudly representing their clubs. It’s always a pleasure to meet and reconnect with angling friends, share stories, support one another, and celebrate our shared passion for this sport.

I’m so proud of each and every angler who participated, thank you for flying the FBMT flag high.

We also had some fantastic achievements worth celebrating:

Kodi Goosen – Overall Top Junior Angler and Heaviest Yellowtail

Rebecca Lane – 3rd Place Lady Angler

Jacqui Decker – Top Lady Angler and Heaviest Yellowtail

James – Record catch for a Tropical Yellowtail

Gareth Decker – Money Prize for Heaviest Yellowtail and Yellowfin caught in a league

FBMT placed third overall, a remarkable achievement and something we can all be proud of!

I truly hope more of our angling members will join us in the league and be part of the next prize giving.

A huge thank you to Roger and Sonja Maris for organizing such a well-run and enjoyable evening and to Struisbaai Deep Sea Angling Club for hosting it all so beautifully.

With gratitude,
G. Decker Angling Commodore"

Willy Learmonth - 1943 - 2025

Willy passed away during the night of the 23rd June after suffering with great courage and dignity for several months from a nasty malignancy. Mike and I will always prefer to remember him for his impish sense of humour, loyalty and cast iron integrity. Willy studied Quantity Surveying at UCT and qualified in 1966. He and the late Pete Liddle joined FBYC in about 1968, having built a Buccaneer, which they raced quite successfully. They sold it in 1989 and bought, in Willy’s words, “a much prettier boat” - Horizon. A few years later they were able to buy one of the first marinas in A row. In 1996 he was elected Chairman of the Marina Owners Association and later a director and vice chair of the Simonstown Marina Company.

Willy had a successful career in the building industry, ending up as a director and shareholder of Neil Muller Construction from which he retired in 2008. In 2014 he was elected Vice Commodore of FBYC during my second term as Commodore. He was a pillar of strength for me personally and a source of wisdom and guidance for the General Committee as a whole. At all times Willy promoted the best interests of the club and its members, and never pandered to personal vendettas or vested interests. He sailed with Mike on Indigo to St Helena in 2003 as part of the Governor’s Cup race and went on to cruise the Caribbean with them. In 2008 he joined Mike on an Atlantic crossing to Brazil.

In addition to his passion for sailing and the sea he was also active in motor racing, winning the Western Province Formula Ford Motor Championship in 1973. In later years he and his wife Frauke developed a great love for viewing and photographing wild life. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park was a special place for the two of them. Our thoughts are with Frauke, Sandy, her husband Dan and Kirsty and their children, whom Willy adored. He was widely liked and respected. He will be remembered fondly by all of us.

John Cowlin and Mike Drinkrow.

“When Willy Learmonth (former WP Saloon Renault Gordini racer) addressed friends and family at the Franschhoek Motor Museum reveal the level of respect he enjoyed amongst his peers and competitors were once again highlighted.”
