Recent highlights and developments at CCRC
This month at Cape Coastal Rowing we’ve welcomed new faces, launched new boats and marked a few milestones worth sharing.
At this year’s AGM we noted steady growth: membership has moved from 51 to 59. Encouragingly, several younger rowers have joined CCRC and FBYC, which bodes well for the future of our sport (and gives the veterans someone else to carry the boats).
We thanked outgoing commodore Estelle Wiid for her service and welcomed Pete Goosen as CCRC commodore. Sasha van der Krol takes over as club captain with Harriet Hoets-Turner as vice captain. Dave Marrs, Vanessa Nucci, Derrick Read and Jamie Ingram continue in their roles, ensuring some ballast remains in place.
Boat Naming: Seekat and Skipjack We used the AGM gathering to christen our two new quads, Seekat and Skipjack. This increases our capacity to 46 seats, comprised of 6 quads, 6 doubles and 4 single sculls.
Lawhill Rowing: Ten Years On Our partnership with the Lawhill Maritime Trust reached its tenth year and is going from strength to strength. We now have 23 grade 11 and 12 rowers and another 23 in grade 10. Coaching sessions run on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings – either outdoors, weather permitting, or indoor ergo sessions up at the school.
Coastal Rowing on the Olympic Stage Coastal rowing has been officially recognised as an Olympic sport, and for the first time, the sport has representation with Rowing South Africa (RowSA). This opens up inspiring pathways for our younger members to compete at the highest levels and for our club to play a role in shaping the future of coastal rowing in South Africa.
Together, we row further.

The Closing Cruise was held on Saturday 26th July. Many boats came out to close the 2024 / 2025 season. Thank you to Bruce Travers-Phillips for accommodating the Commodore on his beautiful yacht “Lello”. The fleet congregated in the bay, and the procession was then led by the Vice Commodore onboard Jabulani.
Thirteen yachts and three rowing boats then passed the anchored Commodore followed by the Rear Commodore Sailing onboard “Serendipity” bringing up the rear.
The crews then met up in the “Crow’s Nest” for a fun afternoon.
Thank you to Simon McDonnell for being our photographer for the day.
