CAPE COASTAL ROWING

The weekend of 28-30 August 2025 we had our Cape Coastal Rowing Club flower tour to Langebaan. The second tour to this region that I led, with the help of my rowing companions and Dave Marrs .
This was the first of its kind with 3 sea quads, (2 recently acquired), 2 doubles and a single, with 20 rowers present.
We rowed along the majical perimeter of the Lagoon passing Kraalbaai then onto Churchaven where you could see the flamingos wading in the distance. It was the most captivating outpost where time stands still and only beauty emanates.

Our return trip was challenging and bumpy as the tides typically change in the afternoons, a far cry from the mirror like conditions that we experienced that morning.
In total it was a 22 km round trip and we were ready to feast by the fire later that night. Lots of joviality was had, and we all felt lucky to share in such a pristine part of the world.
The next morning, only 2 quads ventured out this time, whilst the rest went to admire the flowers. We passed Schaapen Island, then the delapidated Reccie base and further on out the mouth towards Jutten Island.
The water was very deep and turbulent and I was holding on tight to my blades. But thankfully, we had some respite as we neared the island where the water was calmer and we could peruse this new found territory from our boats.
Thank heavens for that brief rest though, because on our return we had an exhilarating time surfing the huge swells returning back into the bay!
Boy did I feel alive, and you could hear it! And it was a joy to see my crew beaming with excitement as we soared down the water slope (a bit like tabogganing) at a rate of knots, and again I was holding on tight to the rudder, steering hard against the varying currents beneath our boat. Then soon, after the waters calmed, we could enjoy the delicate light and puffy clouds about us.
That too was another 20 odd kms done and dusted, so in total we covered around 50 kms if we include the short outing had on Friday's arrival to the tour, where some friends just needed to stretch their legs after the trip.
It was another successful event with everyone rolling up their sleeves to load boats and braai up a storm, but mostly just to be together and revel in our beautiful surroundings in the west coast reserve.

Feeling grateful that it was a safe and happy tour and looking forward to next year's adventure that can't come soon enough, the houses are already booked.
