Even though the weather wasn’t exactly good, it did give us a break and allowed the fleet to go out on the water. Thank you to all that braved the weather and went out, this included Anglers, Rowers, Sailors and it was great to see the Development / Youth in all these disciplines out there. A fantastic day was had by all and was rounded off with great snacks and live music.

SAILING NEWS

Spring Regatta
Spring Regatta is around the corner with less than three weeks to go. Entries are coming in fast. We are very grateful to INTASURE our key sponsor and are happy to announce that SAS has come onboard with some sponsorship. They join all the other sub-sponsors that support FBYC Sailing throughout the year and again for the Spring Regatta, namely STBB, THE SCONE SHACK, THE PINK PURSE, ARK INFLATABLES, ALLPORT CARGO SERVICES, SOUTHER POINT MARINE and PAINTSMITHS. This year we’re hoping for a great regatta with good sailing and lots of fun.

Some FBYC members may have noticed that things have been rather quiet on the rowing front, but this is starting to change as members return from various rowing excursions and the weather warms up.
In particular several of our members spent July rowing the rivers of the Czech Republic, notably rowing down the Vltava River and under the medieval Charles Bridge, which divides Prague into two halves. The distances were long, up to 50kms a day, but the rowing was leisurely with plenty of stops to navigate locks or stop for lunch and a mandatory beer. Needless to say, the South African rowers soon learned that they could not keep up with their German counterparts when it came to beer followed by an afternoon of rowing.
Other members of the CCRC family have been absent for a different reason. While the club is known for its emphasis on social rather than competitive rowing, the lure of the World Rowing Masters Regatta - which is being held in Africa for the first time ever - proved too tempting.
The event is being held at Roodeplaat dam outside of Pretoria from 21-24 September, and as a result, some intensive training is taking place at Zeekoeivlei with our friends from Alfreds Rowing Club.

Our Lawhill training programme initiated the grade 10s into rowing two weekends ago - inevitably on a blustery and miserable day.
Despite the weather, all 14 youngsters were back the following weekend, keener than ever to learn the elusive art of rowing.
We are incredibly proud of one of our Lawhill rowers, Thobeka Mavundla, who was selected to participate in the 2023 Arshay Cooper Leadership Camp in Vermont, USA.
He flew the South African colours high, even participating in a sculling race on a river that makes our harbour basin look small. He will be talking about his experiences at Lawhill on Friday at 14h30.

Last but not least, CCRC was delighted to be part of the row past, celebrating the opening of the summer sailing season, and doffing a cap to FBYC's Commodore, David Saul.
