SPECIAL NOTICES

Derek Louwrens

1933 - 2023
Dear Members

We regret to inform you that Derek Louwrens passed away on 24 September 2023.

Derek was a Past Commodore and Honorary Life Member of FBYC. He served as Commodore from 1985 to 1988. He will be sorely missed by all. Our deepest condolences to his family
and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday 06 October at 11am at the Bergvliet Methodist Church. There will be a reception in the
hall afterwards.

Reflections by Past Commodores

He was greatly respected and will definitely be missed. Derek helped make FBYC what it is today.
Jan Cluistra

Derek was a past commodore whom I greatly respected. When I inherited an insolvent club in 2002, his quiet guidance and support during many a turbulent Special General meeting brought much needed stability at a very troubled time. I agree with Jan.
Dr John Cowlin

As a past commodore, he was very helpful to me as a new commodore, his wisdom and persona will be sorely missed. A true gentleman. My condolences to his family.
Mark van der Sandt

Derek was a true gentleman, and I will never forget how he helped me negotiate that very fractious AGM by standing up for the values of the club. We will all miss him. My condolences to the family.
Chris Lee

Derek was an amazing commodore who served the club with distinction. Besides his flair for good organisation, he was always willing to give sound advice to incoming commodores and committee members and at the same time was always a good listener. Derek always made sure that the club sailing calendar had a good spread of events and he participated in almost all of them. He was from the past sailing generation and was a stickler for correct dress code and flag etiquette at the club. Besides the leadership role he played in the club, he also chaired the Cruising Assoc of SA. (CASA). I first met Derek in the early sixties when we sailed dinghies at IYC. With all Derek’s attributes I’m sure that he would mostly like to be remembered as an accomplished yachtsman. He will be sadly missed.

SAILING NEWS

Spring Regatta

We had 39 boats arrive for Spring Regatta. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t play ball. We managed to reduce the Coastal / Cruising Division to one race only. This resulted in SIXPAK from RCYC coming 1st, 2nd was Elwing FBYC and 3rd was Thunderchild RCYC. With only one race completed in all the Racing Divisions, there were no overall results for the regatta. All the competitors however had a fantastic time and apart from the weather the regatta was a success. Visit the Spring Regatta website for all the results.

This year’s lucky draw was won by Rotary Scout. They won a B&G Chart Plotter worth R30,000.00, thanks to M-RAD.

We are very grateful to INTASURE our key sponsor and to SAS, SEAPORT SUPPLIES, ULLMAN SAILS,
M- RAD, STBB, THE SCONE SHACK, THE PINK PURSE, ARK INFLATABLES, ALLPORT CARGO SERVICES, SOUTHERN POINT MARINE and PAINTSMITHS who joined in as sub-sponsors.

MBR 2023

Unfortunately due to various reasons this race was cancelled.

ROWING

A fortnight ago a group of intrepid Cape Coastal rowers headed to Roodeplaat dam in Pretoria to compete in World Rowing's Masters Regatta.
The regatta annual event is open to rowers 27 years of age and older. Rowers race in age categories starting at ‘A’ for those with a minimum age of 27 and continue through to ‘M’ for crews with an average age of 89 or more. Incredibly, the event honoured at least 15 rowers of 80-years or more, with the oldest 94. Our own Derrick Read and Peter Thompson were honoured.
Almost 1000 contestants took part, from over 30 countries. The event was host to at least 8 former Olympians from SA alone and many other Olympians or almost Olympians from around the world. And the foreigners loved every minute - from the incredible organisation by the SA officials, to the zebra and kudu grazing on the opposite bank, to the drumming and gumboot dancing, and the big-screen, open-air SA vs Ireland rugby match. The event wasn't without excitement and Roodeplaat, while a little dry and dusty, put on her best colours for the visitors - including a somewhat thrilling and hair-raising lightning storm two days before the event which saw all contestants - including paraplegics - evacuated from their tents.
Cape Coastal, while not altogether familiar with fine boat racing brought home an impressive array of gold medals following the four-day event. Congratulations go to our Commodore Estelle Wiid, who won gold together with Ivan Heesom-Greene, Pieter Coetzer and Tessa McKay in the mixed quad - and then didn't stop to collect their medals because they didn't realise they had won.
Gold medals also went to Derrick Read and Pete Thompson in the double, and to Derrick in the scull (single), and to Hayla (our NSRI crew member) who won gold rowing for Alfreds Rowing Club in their eight.

A special shout out to Thato Mabelane who won gold in her sculls event, in her mixed doubles para event with Carl Schreuder who lost his leg as a youngster, and finally in her mixed doubles event with former SA olympian Sizwe Ndlovu. That's power!
