ROWING

CCRC has enjoyed a series of extra special weeks in the company of many international rowers.
This includes seven of our Dutch visitors from de Laak Rowing Club in the Hague.

Their first tour visit since 2018, saw a well-planned and successfully executed tour up the West Coast. Organised by our teams of dedicated rowers, who on this side diligently prepared boats, trailers, budgets, accommodation, transport, towing, routes, weather, menus, wine stash, and more.

Always a challenge to better a previous tour, the highlight of our guests’ second southward trip this time, was an away tour to a different part of the Cape West Coast they had never seen before.

Visiting new territory took the group up to the historic Kersefontein Farmstead on the Breede River, about 30km from Velddrif. As always, our host Julian Melck, pulled out every stop to accommodate the party in the old Cape Dutch farm cottages among sheep and cow sheds. The arrival of a little lamb entertained our youngest guest, suitably occupied with feedings and all things farming.

The famous traditional Saturday night historic talk and dinner treat in the classic old dining room, filled with art and family heirlooms, was preceded by a sundowner tractor-trailer ride to view this massive farm, in perfect light of a breathtaking sunset.

A team of 13 rowers in one quad and four doubles rowed up and down the Berg River from Veldriff to Port Owen to view the magnificent bird life, to Laaiplek Harbour, and along the coastline to St Helena Bay.

The most exciting part for us all was to explore new water, with lots of beach swims and picnics, from there to Shelley Point, around the point of Cape St Martin, to Paternoster Rock Islands.

Probably the most spectacular part of our row was the hidden and not so hidden reefs, magnificent rocks, and beaching for an idyllic swim just before Paternoster main beach to pack our trailers for the return journey.
Our West Coast tour alone totaled 150 rowing km and many more during several False Bay rows, finishing off with 50 km on the Cape Point journey at the end, more to follow on this.

So many to thank for making this tour such a brilliant success! From our home base at FBYC, to Kim and team at the Boatyard Company, and Carl and Sean with their team at Pier 23, who as usual provided a splendid traditional SA braai for their farewell dinner.

Thank you teams CCRC and FBYC for always making us proud to receive visitors from around the globe, and especially this year following the World Master’s Regatta.
Last but not least, is that CCRC also had the privilege of entertaining our biggest number of visiting rowers within a couple of weeks following the World Masters Rowing Championships in Pretoria. We rowed with many impressive masters athletes from Germany, Australia, Canada, and India. Not only did they experience our pristine coastline, but generously filled our maintenance coffers with record sales of orange club T-Shirts and our ever in-demand white Penguin caps.
Well done to every contributor and enthusiast for all your support and dedication to this wonderful sport!
