Ryan Gibson: Sailing Phenom Takes on the World in the Clipper Race
From Childhood Dreams to Global Waters, Gibson's Adventure Inspires
In the world of sailing, one name has recently emerged as a beacon of inspiration and achievement: Ryan Gibson. The 34-year-old sailor's journey from sailing alongside his father at the False Bay Yacht Club to competing in the grueling Clipper Around the World race is a testament to the enduring power of passion and perseverance.
Gibson's remarkable odyssey into the world of sailing began when he was just seven years old, as he crossed the Atlantic with his parents Mark and Lisette Gibson, and older brother Justin. Mark, a devoted member of the False Bay Yacht Club for over five decades, was not merely imparting sailing skills to his son but igniting a lifelong passion for the boundless blue expanse of the ocean.
Since that fateful voyage, Ryan's life has been a continuous exploration of the world's waters. He has sailed to remote and exotic locations, crisscrossed the Atlantic on multiple occasions, and engaged in thrilling boat races, both close to home in South Africa and on the global stage. His competitive spirit has been showcased in events such as the Oyster Palma Regatta, Palma Classic Regatta, and The Superyacht Cup.
However, Ryan's most audacious challenge to date is his current undertaking in the Clipper Around the World Yacht Race, aboard the yacht "Dare to Lead." This extraordinary race, which circumnavigates the globe, sets itself apart by offering non-professional sailors the opportunity to experience the exhilaration of ocean racing. The race, which extends over nearly a year, features a fleet of identical yachts, each sponsored by a different city or region.
The competition is divided into several legs, and participants can choose to complete a single leg or take on the herculean task of circumnavigating the globe. To ensure the safety and skill development of the amateur sailors, professional skippers provide training and guidance, preparing them for the myriad challenges they will encounter, from tranquil seas to tempestuous storms.
Ryan's ambitions for the Clipper Race go beyond personal achievement. He seeks to lead a crew of fellow non-professional sailors, offering his extensive knowledge and promoting teamwork. He eagerly anticipates the moment he sails into South Africa, a pinnacle moment in his illustrious career. In addition to his personal accomplishments, it's worth noting that "Dare to Lead" sponsors a crew member for the South African Development Sailing program, demonstrating Ryan's commitment to giving back to the sailing community and providing opportunities for aspiring sailors.
The anticipation of confronting the infamous Roaring Forties, a region in the Southern Ocean renowned for its ferocious conditions, further ignites Ryan's competitive spirit and determination.
Away from the open waters, Ryan's zest for adventure is manifest in a plethora of outdoor activities, including surfing, wakeboarding, kiteboarding, and snowboarding. His advanced PADI open diver certification, love of travel, passion for fishing, and talents in tennis and golf demonstrate a well-rounded individual who seizes life's opportunities with both hands.
He also co-owns the Madagascar Surf Resort alongside his father, forging their shared love for the ocean into a thriving venture. Ryan's dedication to family is equally remarkable. His wife, Veronika, and son, Cody, travelled from the Czech Republic to Cape Town to welcome him when he sails into the harbour, highlighting his role as a devoted father to Cody.
The Clipper Race, with its emphasis on fostering teamwork, leadership, and personal growth, has captivated the imaginations of individuals from various backgrounds. As Ryan Gibson's journey unfolds, he not only symbolizes the indomitable spirit of adventure but also the enduring bond between a father and son who have together weathered the seas for generations at the False Bay Yacht Club. His achievements inspire us all to pursue our passions and conquer the world, both on the water and beyond.
Well done to Ryan and his crew on winning the leg to Cape Town.
FBYC wishes Ryan and his crew all the very best for Race 4, which starts on Saturday 18th November in Cape Town, to Fremantle, Australia.

🌊 Yellowtail's Elusive Dance: The yellowtail are proving to be elusive, engaging anglers in a game of patience and strategy. Despite their elusive nature, the thrill of the pursuit adds an extra layer of excitement to every expedition.

🌬 South Easter Weather Adds Drama: The elements are putting on a show with a bit of South Easter weather. While it may pose a challenge, the silver lining is in the forecast. As we approach the end of the week, the weather is expected to ease, paving the way for optimal fishing conditions.
🐟 Tuna Take Center Stage: Excitement peaked last weekend as the tuna took center stage, biting eagerly in the deep waters. A special shout-out to Dylan Thompson, who reeled in an awe-inspiring bull Mahi Mahi, showcasing the incredible feats our community achieves.

For many of us at Cape Coastal Rowing Club, Wilderness is one of those places you drive through on route to Knysna, Plett and beyond. And as for Mossel Bay, who stops there?
Well, we recently had reason to alter our views!
On a recent rowing tour we decided on a change of scenery and so it was that 18 rowers, many with partners in tow, headed down the Garden route for a long weekend of rowing, hiking and exploring. The SANParks run Ebb and Flow rest camp on the Touw River was our home for the weekend, from where we rowed and hiked. The pictures below tell their own story!
Arguably the navigable part of the river was a little too short for the distance rowing that we like, but the bird life, beautiful scenery and hike up to the waterfall made up for it. We saw Louries, Black Headed Orioles, Coots, Cormorants, Kingfishers and many more species – there are over 85 species in the riverine bush alone - but sadly we did not see (or hear) any Fish Eagles.
On Sunday we set off for Mossel Bay, home to Nick Krone, one of Cape Coastal’s many friends along the SA coastline. He introduced us to Rob and Elfie Holden, founders of The Learn to Sail School and new license holders at the old Mossel Bay Yacht Club. They are running their development sailing initiative from the site and many promising developments are in the pipeline.
We had a wonderful row in windy conditions, almost around the island and back, and will hopefully be back for more!
Last but not least, the tour also saw us collect our ‘new’ quad from a boat-builder (Tim Hutton) in George.
While we have some work to do to ensure she is robust enough for the False Bay to Cape Point oceans, we were able to put her through her paces this weekend. A name is soon to come!
