ROWING

IN MEMORY OF A LEGEND

Last week Cape Coastal bid farewell to a dear friend and founding member of the club, John ‘Johnny’ Bothma, who slipped away peacefully in the early hours of Friday 15th of December.
Johnny in his favourite seat - bow
He leaves his beloved wife of 62 years, Penny, his children Kathy, Mike, Lindy and Nic, much-loved daughters and sons-in-law as well as treasured grandchildren and great grandchildren. His was a life well lived.

Johnny had many passions in life, but chief among them was his love of the ocean, of rowing and of sailing. He spent countless weekends sailing his lovely yacht Ariette with friends and family, and over 75 years rowing.

He began as an 11-year old at Selbourne College, rowed through his ‘varsity days at Rhodes, where he earned national colours, followed by many years at Wemmer Pan Rowing Club in Johannesburg (where he met Derrick Read), and latterly at Cape Coastal Rowing Club.

For him rowing was about the solace he found on the water, as well as the physical fitness and discipline it demanded. Johnny had type 2 diabetes and notably managed the disease entirely with diet and exercise – to the amazement of the medical fraternity. His self-discipline and ability to think logically in the most difficult situations got him out of many a tight spot, one of which stands out. Johnny rowed his single scull out of Hout Bay almost every weekday and was unfazed by the Atlantic swell and currents. On one occasion he fell out of his boat and spent 30 minutes in 12 degree water trying to get back into it. Finally, he thought to use the well-worn doek on his head to bind the blade handles together, enabling him to swim around and clamber up the bow. Freezing and almost hypothermic he then rowed back to the harbour, recounting the story over breakfast the following weekend. For Johnny rowing transcended mere sport. Its true value lay in nurturing a community, providing a platform for shared experiences, friendship, camaraderie and endless banter.

One of Johnny’s cherished experiences was the opportunity to complete the Robben Island Freedom paddle, a 27km course that takes you from Granger Bay, around the island and back, with his son Nic. It is a tough course, made tougher by inclement waves and wind. Anyone who thinks that it was Nic who got the then 85-year old around the course might be mistaken. Nic will tell you it was the other way around.

Johnny’s commitment to Cape Coastal was memorable: he was the first on the slip in the morning, the first to offer to coach the Lawhill students when the time came, and the first to put his hand up for tours. On tour we enjoyed his legendary cakes, his gravadlax, glasses (perhaps bottles) of red wine, and his naughty jokes (one of which included three wise pieces of advice for men over 60 😉)

Among his many talents, he was also a master craftsman and was a member of the Traditional Boat Association (where he met Geordie Kohler), building a beautiful wooden gaff cutter among items that included treehouses and weather cocks.

In 2012 Geordie fetched the first coastal rowing boat, called Brisky, from St Francis and together he and Johnny tested it out, rowing to Fish Hoek. This sight galvanised Derrick Read who arranged for the delivery of two youlettes which had been gathering dust in the Western Cape. Derrick then enticed Dave Marrs and Julie Geddes to join, and Cape Coastal was born.

Johnny will be remembered for his kindness, strength, sincerity, wisdom, his gentle voice which carried such authority, and his ability to make everyone feel important, accepted and never, ever judged.

He will live on in the wind, the ocean spray across the bow, the bond that holds his loved ones together, and for his lasting advice:
‘Just don’t stop’.
