Pilot Gig Rowing open to all FBYC members

We are thrilled to announce that our two beautiful pilot gigs, moored right in front of the yacht club, are now fully operational and ready for you to enjoy.
This exciting addition to our club offers a fantastic opportunity for all members to experience the unique thrill of pilot gig rowing.

What is Pilot Gig Rowing?

Pilot gig rowing is a traditional and exhilarating form of rowing that not only provides an excellent workout but also fosters a strong sense of camaraderie among participants. Originating from Cornwall, these sturdy six-oared boats were historically used for piloting ships and rescue missions, but today, they serve as perfect vessels for recreational rowing and racing.

Free for All Members

We are delighted to offer pilot gig rowing free to all paid-up club members. Whether you're an experienced rower or a complete novice, this is your chance to get involved in an activity that combines fitness, fun, and teamwork. We do ask that you have basic fitness and mobility in order to join up.

Expert Coaches Available

Don't worry if you're new to gig rowing! We have expert coaches available to guide you every step of the way. Our instructors will teach you the fundamentals of rowing, from proper technique to coordination with your crew. With their guidance, you'll quickly gain confidence and proficiency on the water.

Health and Fitness Benefits

Rowing is renowned for its full-body workout benefits. It enhances cardiovascular health, builds muscle strength, and improves endurance. Plus, there's nothing quite like the feeling of gliding across the water, powered by your own efforts and the synchronised teamwork of your crew.

How to Sign Up

Signing up is easy. Simply send a Whatsapp message to Pieter Coetzer on 0837806704 to be added to the Whatsapp group. We will provide you with all the information you need, including session times and what to bring. We typically row after work when the weather is favourable. Remember, spaces are limited, so be sure to sign up soon to secure your spot!

Join Us on the Water!

This is a fantastic opportunity to try something new, meet fellow club members, and enjoy the great outdoors.

So why not give pilot gig rowing a try?

Whether you're looking to improve your fitness, make new friends, or simply enjoy a new hobby, our pilot gigs are ready and waiting for you.

Gold at SA National Champs

Hayla Westhead, a Cape Coastal Rowing Club rower, has clinched both a gold and a bronze medal at the 2024 South African National Rowing Championships held in April.
Hayla, a rower with an impressive track record, gained victory with a gold medal in the mixed 8 category alongside Olympians Ramon di Clemente and Colleen Orsmond. The bronze medal was won in the mixed quad race.

Hayla said, "the racing was tough but the opportunity to row with previous olympians was thrilling".

This triumph adds to her rowing career, having secured a gold medal at the World Rowing Masters Regatta last year.
Hayla uses FBYC to train for her competitions and is an active member of Cape Coastal Rowing Club. Hayla is also part of the False Bay Gig Rowing group, having previously rowed gigs in England and now coaches the gig rowers.
