Ryan Gibson on Dare To Lead continues to do very well overall and remains in fourth place overall on 106 points, Zhuhai is third on 124 points, 2nd is Perseverance on 128 points and 1st is Ha Long Bay Viet Nam on 131 points. FBYC Youth Sailing Shines Bright
False Bay Yacht Club runs several junior sailing programs throughout the year; and has teamed up with both Lawhill Maritime Centre and Isivunguvungu, a FBYC sailing initiative in this regard.
Members may have noticed the Lawhill students training hard on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings on Homero and Hooligan, and we have just welcomed a new and very enthusiastic group.
According to Sailing Manager Paul Dennett, “The Isivunguvungu sailors have joined in our club racing events and won our club championship.
“We welcome Ryan Letherby and Thabiso Jim (Bean) as junior instructors for our youth sailing program.
“Ryan has been instrumental in helping to start and grow our youth program by introducing young blood to sailing and our club. A special thanks goes to Philip Lamb and Jason Mills for all the hard work they have put into the youth program.”
The FBYC has seen the donation of two Optimists, which will be used to train youngsters. To this end, Geoff Genricks of Intasure has indicated that they are willing to sponsor a portion of the dinghy section.
The FBYC has run two programs that were initiated by SA Sailing, known as the SAS Learn to Sail with Schools Program. One program saw six students from Fish Hoek High School attending and the second program consisted of six students from Simon’s Town High School.
There is a definite interest from FBYC club members for their kids to learn how to sail and the sailing office is busy putting a program together. This will be run on the same structure as the SAS Learn to Sail with Schools program.
Watch this space for more updates and to hear about our young and up and coming sailors!
