WPDSAA PRIZE GIVING

Western Province had their prize-giving last weekend, hosted by Cape Boat. We had a few FBYC members receive awards, congratulations to you all. It would be great to have FBYC back on the radar for next year’s Western Province prize-giving.

Please see the link below for all the pictures. In the image below, we are missing Brian Fitchit, he unfortunately left before this picture was taken.

INSHORE LEAGUE

There is an Inshore League coming up this month, on the 24th and 25th August, weather permitting. Please get in touch with me should you be interested in participating, it is so worth the effort as you can really do yourself as an individual, your team/boat and your club proud. To be part of your own club prize-giving awards as well as Western province is very commendable.

SAILING NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS

Closing Cruise

This year’s Closing Cruise was held on Saturday 27th July. With the weather being absolutely terrible we decided not to do a sail past but rather a tunnel of honour was formed and the Commodore and Rear Commodore Sailing passed through. It was rather unconventional but worked out really well. A fantastic day was had by all that attended.

FBYC Annual Prize-Giving

The FBYC Annual Sailing prize-giving was held on Saturday 3rd August.
Around fifty-five members attended. Cheff Gary produced an amazing two course meal, and a great evening was had by all that attended.

National Women's Day

We are looking forward to the Ladies Helm.

There is a group of twenty ladies that would like to go for a sail on Saturday 10th August. We are looking for some boats to volunteer to take them out for about an hour.

Please let the sailing office know if you can help out.

Lipton Cup Challenge | 27th – 31st August

Our FBYC team has had a slight set back on Bonita, with a spreader issue but are continuing to prepare for the event.

We wish them all the best for their campaign and will support them all the way.

Clipper Race

Well, finally the 14 legs of this race are over. Ryan Gibson on Dare To Lead has done very well finishing in fifth place overall on 107 points. Zhuhai was third on 134 points, 2nd was Perseverance on 137 points and 1st was Ha Long Bay Viet Nam on 138 points.

Our FBYC members enjoyed following and supporting Ryan throughout the race.
Well done, Ryan!!

Moorings for racing boats 26’ or less

FBYC together with STMC have re-introduced cheaper moorings that will be available to boats that take part in Club Races. These mooring are very limited and will only be given out with certain T’s & C’s. You can come to the Sailing Office to find out more.

CAPE COASTAL ROWING

International Rowing Tour to Bretagne, France

Cape Coastal Rowing Club & Oldenburg Ruderverein

Last month nine South African rowers - seven CCRC members and two from upcountry, plus our 13 German rowing tour friends, including one dedicated ‘land diens’ driver, and one French speaking rower, toured for 12 days in the Celtic air of Brittany.

The groups met in Paris after the Oldenburgers traveled to and from Germany, towing four classic clinker wood - five man - sculling boats. We were kept on the move in three nine-seater busses, with boat trailer and luggage to camp sites, youth hostels, and hotels in a surprisingly cool, northern France in mid-summer.

We rowed about 260km with long daily distances, anywhere from 14 to 40 km on river estuaries and the canals including river Rance, Vilaine, and Blavet as well as a few tidal estuaries and lagoons on the coast, including Golfe du Morbihan. The group rowed from the St Malo area through Dinan, Rennes, Pontivy to Hennebont, and Vannes through numerous locks of up to 13 in one day. Magnificent scenery, calm rivers, and traditional French picnic lunches on riverbanks were the order of the day.
Never a dull moment amid the rich cultural history of medieval villages, castles, and museums. Non-rowing and rest days were spent on excursions to UNESCO World Heritage sites, at Normandy WW2 beaches and memorials, Abbey le Mont Saint Michel, Vannes, the Carnac Neolithic Alignments, and quaint Southern bay of Quiberon. A fitting end to the adventure in the old town of Concarneau, with an early skinny dip (that's our German friends...) in a French tidal pool, near the castle was perfect!

A well organised tour all round, and great social fun in the locks at some pretty lock houses, keeping time with French lock keepers who require 24 hours’ notice prior to arrival. And so, the chant of ‘three cheers for the lock keeper - hip-hip hooray - nog ‘n piep’ was heard in the next village in no time!

Big thanks go to Jürg and Manya and their Oldenburger team for their across borders efforts and yet another fantastic European tour. And to our CCRC tour leader Pieter Coetzer and to Derrick Read, who has over many years cemented these rowing relationships, now famously known as ‘friendship tours’.

Research study within False Bay Yacht club

An interesting read from a group of postgraduate marine science students conducting their research at our club.

"... to give you a quick background, we are CPUT students pursuing a postgraduate diploma in marine science. We are currently studying two marine biofouling invertebrate species that might be present within the yacht club. There is a possibility that these could be alien species, meaning they occur in an environment where they are not typically found. There is also a possibility that these species are native or indigenous to South African waters.

Biofouling, in a nutshell, is the ability of marine species to attach to substrates in the water. You will commonly find them attached to hard substrates such as rocks, ships, and beneath yachts. Marinas have been identified as hotspots for biofouling alien species. Therefore, we focused our studies within three marinas to observe if these organisms occur there.
We will be studying the genetic diversity and body plan of these species. We have already collected samples using artificial arrays, which we hung beneath the jetties and left for four months (Figure 1).

Figures 2 and 3 showcase how quickly these organisms can grow. Figure 2 was taken on June 4th, while Figure 3 was taken on June 28th. We placed five arrays in each marina and the outcome of each array differed either slightly or completely from the others. You can see a small example of this by comparing Figures 3 and 4 which were both placed in False Bay yacht club. There is also a difference in species abundance and diversity when looking at different marinas, as seen in Figures 4 and 5. However, this may not always be the case." Shaakirah Sulaiman

If you would like to know more, click the link below to download a journal article detailing a similar approach used to collect biofouling species.
