CCRC Matrics Farewell and Athabile’s story
We’re inspired by the positive outcomes of the CCRC’s student intake of year 2022 over the past three years.
This weekend we celebrated with our Grade 12 students as they completed their last year of the Lawhill Maritime Academy – CCRC Learn to Row Program 2024.
Glassy conditions allowed the15 matric ocean rowers to have loads of fun, and finish in true coastal rowing style in three five-seater ocean sculls on Saturday. Accompanied by four coaches in two doubles, the rowing activity ended with a scrumptious lunch served at FBYC Restaurant by kind favour of the Lawhill Trust.
Congratulations everyone, you have made us more than proud over the past three years!
These high spirits, however were initiated back in July already, when LMA matric student Athabile Msindo was selected to join the Arshay Cooper Foundation, at the annual rowing camp of 21 international rowing students at the famous Craftsbury Sports Centre in Vermont, USA. Originally from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape, Athabile set off on his first international adventure with the full support of his home, school, and club families.
Accompanied by University of the Western Cape Student, and fine boat sculling rower Curtley van Wyk, as the only two SA rowers in this group, they kept company with fellow young rowers from the Bahamas, Uk , and 18 from the US. While enjoying the camp, with exciting social and cultural exchanges, new friendships, and a magnificent environment, they also faced up to some tough racing heats in high temperatures.
Daily schedules included indoor and outdoor coaching sessions, with seven coaches and six intern assistants. Realising the nature of this competitive environment on foreign water, Athabile wisely invested his free afternoons to achieve a higher level of flat water rowing in the fine single. As a competent ocean rower in quadruple sculls, doubles, and single, he quickly converted his skills into competing in a narrow, light weight, beautiful, fine single scull.
His efforts paid off as he completed the final challenge in fourth place among 14 other experienced, single scullers.
In his words, the magnificent setting of the 3km stretch of water at camp and the company of many rowers ‘who looks like me’, with a special mention of Aquil Abdullah - the first African American Olympic US rower - inspired him to recognise his own potential, and to follow this journey to excellence.
Well done on your remarkable achievement Athabile, we are proud of you!
As we bid farewell to our 15 matric rowing students preparing for final exams, we also look forward to congratulating them at the LMI Maritime Awards event in November. We thank each one of you, for your determination, diligence, and regular attendance to have completed the CCRC LMI Learn to Row Program – currently in its 10th year of existence.
Big thanks also to every CCRC coach, Mr Derrick Read – CCRC senior coach master, Pieter Coetzer, Mr Michael Ortlieb – UWC Coach, and Mrs Debbie Owen of LMI for your passion and efforts in this worthy cause.

GB BURSARY FUND SAIL & MOTOR PROGRAMME
On Saturday, 12 October 2024, the GBOBA Bursary Fund’s Sail and Motor Programme celebrated an exciting milestone as four Grade 11 students from the Lawhill Maritime Centre (LMC) and two TS Woltemade Sea Cadets successfully qualified for their Category E Motorboat certification. This achievement was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of Digby Thomson, who volunteered his time and expertise to train the students. Additionally, five other Grade 11 LMC students qualified for their Sailing Day Skippers after receiving expert training from Mills Boat Academy. As part of a long-standing tradition, the False Bay Yacht Club (FBYC) treated the students to lunch, celebrating their hard work and accomplishments. This gesture has always been a way for FBYC to give back to the community and show appreciation for the students' dedication. The celebratory lunch provided an opportunity for the students to relax, bond with their mentors, and reflect on their achievements in a supportive and positive environment.
