ROWING

Gig rowing at FBYC

Last Sunday, members and friends of FBYC’s gig rowing crew gathered to celebrate the conclusion of their inaugural season with a row and a braai under peachy summer skies. What a season it has been!

For those unfamiliar with the story, the two GRP Cornish Pilot Gigs now moored in front of FBYC were generously facilitated by a group of shipping business leaders and enthusiasts from Singapore and South Africa. These boats, originally built in the UK and used for Mission RASI in Singapore in 2014, arrived in Simon’s Town in November 2023.

(Mission RASI — Row Around Singapore Island— was a maritime endurance challenge in which two replica 19th-century Cornish Pilot Boats were rowed over 140 kilometers to raise funds for seafarers in need worldwide.)
The shipment was arranged by the South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA), with logistical support from companies like Maersk and Wilhelmsen.

Once in Simon’s Town, the gigs were refurbished by volunteers from Lawhill and the Cape Coastal Rowing Club, christened Castor and Pollux, and gig rowing officially launched in July this year.

Since then, the group has grown to include SAMTRA cadets, FBYC cadet members, Lawhill Grade 12 students, and passionate coastal rowers—22 regulars in total.

They are coached by Hayla and Tony, who bring experience in gig rowing from the UK.
First gig row for the Lawhill students (and first experience rowing sweep (two hands on one blade). The smiles tell it all.
Each gig outing involves six rowers, one coxswain, and a spare pilot seat at the bow, with sessions lasting about an hour. The crews are now training for their next big challenge: the Freedom Paddle around Robben Island, set for 27 April 2025.
Sunday’s fun!

FBYC members are welcome to give it a try, we row on Fridays at 16h30. If interested contact Pieter Coetzer via WhatsApp on 083 780 6704.
