ROWING

Cape Coastal Rowing Club – 2024 in Review

As 2024 draws to a close, it’s a perfect moment to reflect on an incredible year for Cape Coastal Rowing Club. From the water to the social scene, the club continues to grow stronger and more vibrant in every way.
Growth and strength on the water

This year has been eventful and rewarding. The annual Freedom Paddle around Robben Island was a highlight with a strong CCRC showing and decent weather – though it’s always a tough race! Hats off to Pieter C. and Thobeka, the first coastal rowers to make it around the island.

Other standout moments included the annual flower tour to Langebaan and the much-anticipated visit from our Belgian rowing friends, both of which were superbly organised and hugely successful. And let’s not forget the whales! This season brought an incredible number of these majestic creatures, offering awe-inspiring encounters that remind us how special it is to row in these waters.

Our regular club rows are getting longer, and our rowers are growing stronger. Membership continues to expand, while our fleet is expertly maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers (a big thank-you to them!) to ensure there are always enough seats for everyone.

Gig rowing has become a vibrant and visible activity at the yacht club, while coastal rowing continues to make quiet waves as a high-performance sport.

Exciting Developments

A milestone this year was the decision to invest in two brand-new coastal quads—our first-ever "out of the box" boat purchase. Generously supported by the TK Foundation and SAMTRA, these new boats are set to arrive in Q1 2025, marking another step forward for CCRC.
Magical moments
Achievements and Recognition

The year ended on a high note with several standout achievements. The Lawhill Maritime Centre capped off a successful year with noteworthy performances at the regatta, and a beneficiary, once again of the Arshay Cooper Foundation.

On the national stage, CCRC's positive reputation in the rowing community continues to grow. Estelle Wiid, FBYC board member and CCRC commodore, was selected to represent coastal rowing on the board of Rowing South Africa (ROWSA). In addition, Estelle and Jamie were invited to promote the development of women’s rowing in South Africa—an exciting recognition of the club’s role in advancing the sport.

This year, CCRC also hosted a few university rowers preparing for the Africa Coastal Rowing Championships in Egypt. This collaboration highlights the growing appeal of coastal rowing to younger athletes, which we hope will draw new members to the club in the future. It’s an exciting time for the sport, and we’re proud to be part of its evolution.

A Social and Supportive Community

The social side of the club has flourished, thanks to the enthusiasm and efforts of Jaco, Angelique, and Jamie. Their energy has made CCRC a welcoming place for everyone. A visiting Maties student perfectly captured the spirit of the club, saying, “It’s like all the happiest, friendliest people all in one place!”

A Heartfelt Thanks

We couldn’t have achieved any of this without the unwavering support of our home base at FBYC. Thank you for another fantastic year of opportunities and collaboration.

As we continue to grow—rowing better, building stronger bonds, and expanding our vibrant community—we’re excited for what lies ahead in 2025. With so much to be grateful for and even more to look forward to, CCRC truly stands out as a special place for everyone involved.

Have a happy and safe festive season, and here’s to another incredible year ahead!
