Dolphyn Diary #275: 10 September 2018

Opening Cruise 2018

The Opening Cruise was a great success!

The picture above says more than words could describe. The weather played fair and the skies cleared just in time for the sail past, breeze was near perfect for some of our sailors who's boats left the docks for the first time - under new owners, as well as for some who have never been out on the sea. The regulars to the water made the most of it and enjoyed their time out sailing to the Lighthouse before the sail past.

The food was fantastic - thank you to Heather and her team from Neptune's Galley. Thank you to the Entertainment Committee - Tanya, Linda, Simone and all staff for organising such a great event. John for assisting with the sound system.

And big thanks to the members for sharing their day with us and taking delegates out on the water on their boats.

Fair winds to all for the 2018/2019 season.

Hello From Dave and Vicki Staniforth

The UK sailing weather continues to exceed expectations this summer. After an extended period in the South-West it was off to Walton-on-the-Naze on the East Coast with Dabber Bob'n'Annie. The Walton Backwaters is the setting for Arthur Ransome's Secret Waters, one of the books in the Swallows and Amazons series. I took the opportunity to read the book again, having first read it some 50 years ago. The sailing was totally different to anything experienced before, the shallow waters are best for boats with lifting centreplates so not many boats access the backwaters. The result is a totally unspoilt, remote landscape. There is an excellent marina at Titchmarsh for boats of all shapes and sizes. Click here for a blog and photos from the rally.

Our UK Drascombe rally season finishes later this month with a visit to Hickling Broad, Norfolk, which will be another new experience with Bob'n'Annie. Hoping to return to the Cape early in 2019 for some more sailing on Longboat Pellicano.

Best wishes to all at FBYC for the new sailing season.

Dave and Vicki Staniforth
