Dolphyn Diary #278: 01 October 2018

The 2018 edition of the Mossel Bay race started at 09h00 sharp on Thursday the 27th of September in rather rainy conditions with the fleet all clear on a downwind start with spinnakers raised almost immediately. The forecast for the race was that the winds would be North-westerly for the duration of the race promising a new race record. This was looking promising with RADIO HOLLAND GRYPHON rounding Cape Agulhas at 16h57. Unfortunately they chose a more inshore route and had to tack offshore again to find heavier winds causing them to lose significant time. They also suffered some damage to their mainsail but in spite of all this, managed to just miss the Race record of 21h23m59s set by Nitro last year by just 30 minutes.

At 19h30, SILVER GIRL was hit by a rogue wave resulting in the loss of their skipper, Melvin Rautenbach, The Race Committee, False Bay Yacht Club and Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club extend their deepest sympathies to his family, friends and crew.

RAYMARINE REGARDLESS followed RADIO HOLLAND GRYPHON into Mossel Bay just 3 minutes behind them and the rest of the fleet all arrived safely and were treated to true MBYBC hospitality.

Most of the fleet left Mossel Bay on Saturday afternoon and were tracked on their return journey thanks to the generosity of XTRA-LINK, one of our Chief sponsors.

Prizegiving is scheduled for 20h00 on Friday, 5th of October.

Clean Regatta - Certificate
Super proud to announce Sailors for the Sea have awarded Intasure Spring Regatta with the Silver Level Clean Regattas certification. By reusing water bottles supplied in the crew packs we saved 900 plastic single use water bottles, over the 3 day event, landing up in the land fills.

Well done to all our members, sailors and their families for keeping our waters clean. Please continue to help keep our waters and club clean by using our very bright and visible bins.

The next First Saturday Paddle of every month -

Saturday 6th October 2018, 10am on the water

This is a great morning for anyone just wanting to paddle with a group of kayakers and surf skiers, no experience required, you must have your own kayak, be a member of FBYC and please make sure you have a life jacket!

The paddle will be held in mild weather conditions and inexperienced paddlers will be accompanied to and from the FBYC slipway if you are a 'first -timer!'

This is a great way to get more comfortable in your kayak or surf ski and ask questions of more experienced paddlers. If you need any other information, phone Dermot Magowan, 083 253 9811.

Look forward to seeing you on the water!!

Good luck to the WPDSAA teams competing at the annual All Coastal Inter Provincial from 29/09 to 2/10 Knysna! Junior Team Christoph Dahl, Divan Burger, Karla Rautmann & Snr Team Colin Joubert, Gus Rautmann and Ron Penninkhof!!!! Good luck and bring the medals home!!!
