EVENTS AND SPECIAL NOTICES
It’s been a year of many changes at FBYC. We have moved onto a new accounting system, we have a new point of sales system in the bar and restaurant, and we have been dealing with the access control, amongst others. Although we have had a few teething problems, we are getting on top of these issues. We would like to thank all the members for their patience and understanding.
We have introduced an incident / suggestion book for members. This can be found on the wall opposite the admin office. The book is for any incidents, e.g. boat collisions and for constructive suggestions to help the club run more efficiently. Members are encouraged to make use of it.
FBYC management and staff wish all the members of FBYC a festive Christmas and a very happy New Year.

As we approach the end of the year – and my final days with the STMC – I wanted to take a moment to write a brief note.
First, let me address the question I’m sure is on many minds: who will be replacing me? The short answer is that no single person will. I'm happy to report that we have put in place a strong team to cover the responsibilities: • Chantelle will be promoted to Admin Manager, supported by a new team member starting in January. • Gelandt will be upskilled to oversee the maintenance and repairs of the marina, assisted by Chiku. • Peter, Henry, and Jeremy will continue to be primarily responsible for the smooth operations on the hard. • Gelandt will be guided and supported by Mike Maitland, who has agreed to continue as a retained technical advisor while maintaining his role as our contracted diver for the marina and swings.
It is with some sadness that I leave without having gained traction on the much-needed D marina project – something I know is important to all of us.
Although my time with the STMC has been short, I have thoroughly enjoyed it. There was certainly a learning curve, but I've had the pleasure of working alongside a fabulous team. And while my employment here is ending, I'm happy to say I'll still be around as a member. It has been a great year, and I'm excited to be leaving at the end of December to go travelling. The role has been a true learning experience and has certainly been character-building.
I wish to express my deep appreciation for working with Gelandt, Peter, Henry, Jeremy, and Chiku. These professionals bring a high level of competence to a difficult job and run both the Hard and the Marina seamlessly. I had no idea when I started at STMC that I would grow to admire and appreciate Chantelle so much – one of the most capable people I have the honour to call a colleague and friend. The Marina is in good hands with this wonderful team.
In addition, a special thank you to the unsung (and unpaid) directors of the STMC Board: Geoff Genricks, Ollie Wright, Dave Parkyn, and a special mention for the recently resigned director James Scott. James is a giver, not a taker. We have been so lucky to have him assisting us with all the matters that need constant attention. And most of all, Mike Brownie, Chairman of the STMC Board, who gives so much of his time and energy to that position. Much appreciated, gentlemen. It has been a pleasure working with you.
I have also had the rare pleasure of working with Mike Maitland, our resident diver and owner of Ocean Bounty Services. Mike has become a good friend, and his vast offshore experience and technical knowledge – which he has generously shared – leave us in no doubt that the Marina is in great condition. I have no sleepless nights when the wind howls and storms sweep across False Bay.
This past year, we have installed ten new swing moorings, one of which can handle boats up to 40 tons. These have been occupied as soon as they were in the water. It has been our ambition to make Simon's Town a close-by destination for our friends at neighbouring yacht clubs – only 20 miles from Gordon's Bay, 40 miles from Hout Bay, and 60 miles from Cape Town. We have made two visitors' docks available, and these are in constant use. There are about 300 cruisers coming down the SA coast as I write, and we love having foreign visitors coming to our delightful little town.
There is much work to be done: it’s been 14 years since Spilly oversaw the refurbishment of all marinas, and that cycle is coming up again; the planking on the marinas needs serious attention; and the D Marina remains an ambitious and much-needed goal.
Thank you all for the opportunity. It has been a privilege.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Notices and Reminders to Members: 1. It has come to the attention of the committee that there are people attempting to enter the club premises on the pretence that they are guests of a member. Members are reminded that their guests must be met and signed in at the entrance gate. Furthermore, members are reminded that they are responsible for their guests whilst on the premises and that their guests may not remain on the premises if the member is not here.
2. There has been several comments and complaints about fishing on the yacht club premises. Please note that fishing in the yacht club area is purely “catch and release”. It is advised that any fish caught be immediately returned to the sea and not kept in buckets, etc. Furthermore, please note that going forward, there will be NO fishing allowed on the marinas. Please be reminded that you are required, by law, to have a fishing licence to catch any fish.
3. Once again there has been several complaints received about dogs on the premises. FBYC has a strict NO DOG policy. Dogs taken directly to the owner’s boat, on a leash, is however permitted.
4. Members are reminded that bringing alcoholic beverages onto the club premises for consumption is not allowed. The only exception to this is when the Bar or Restaurant is closed and alcoholic beverages cannot be bought at the club, e.g. Christmas Day. Alcoholic beverages for consumption on privately owned boats is permitted.
5. Members are requested to please return glasses, taken from the upstairs bar to the downstairs area, back to the bar and not to leave them accumulating downstairs. If the bar is closed when you are finished with your glasses, please could you place them in a safe place to avoid them being blown over by the wind.
6. Members diving in club waters, are advised to use suitable identification methods to warn boaters of your presence in the water, i.e. Diver Down Flag (Flag Alpha). Please don’t dive in the channel used by the NSRI, as this seriously hampers their deployment in emergency situations.
7. Members swimming in club waters are requested to be vigilant of boat movements and are advised to use suitable identification methods to warn boaters of your presence in the water. Furthermore swimmers are not to swim in the marina and to keep clear of the NSRI launching area and channel.
FBYC wishes to thank all members for supporting both the Bar and Restaurant.
Unfortunately due to some members not paying their bar tabs and bills in the restaurant the General Committee has had to implement new regulations:
1. Members must ensure that they have their membership card available to present to staff, in order to receive the discount offered to FBYC members. Please remember that the staff members don’t necessarily know all the FBYC members.
2. The General Committee has instructed both staff in the bar and restaurant to NOT give members the membership discount on food and beverages if they don’t settle their bar tabs or restaurant bills on the day.
3. Members guests will not be afforded any discounts, unless the member pays the bar tab or restaurant bill in full.
These regulations will be implemented with immediate effect.
Please be reminded that the discounts in the bar and restaurant apply to FBYC members only.
Members co-operation in these new regulations will be greatly appreciated.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
Please adhere to the signs which have been placed in the clubhouse.
