CAPTAIN'S LOG – This Month at FBYC
We were recently visited by one of Cape Town’s Fire Chiefs who carried out an inspection.
We are now required to update the plans of our club building and then make various safety changes including replacing the stairs from the deck and installing fire detectors throughout the building linked to an alarm.
This unexpected and costly project has begun and will take a few months to complete. Our financial year ends on the 30th of June and so behind the scenes the hard work of tying things up for the auditors and generating budgets for next year is underway.
Our financial team has completed the arduous migration of our finances to Quickbooks making for a much clearer and efficient system. The preliminary good news is that for the 1st time in years we will not run at a loss this year!
Please show your appreciation to our staff for all their hard work in making FBYC such a great club.

SAILING - Sailing at FBYC
A slightly different one this… Sailing’s given me a lot over the years, and not just the obvious things like racing, results, or getting round a course a bit quicker than you did last time, but something far more steady and far more valuable in the background, which is what it does for your head... FINCOM Report
As we close the financial year, we must reflect on our recent progress while actively preparing and provisioning for the year ahead. To maintain our operations, we will implement an inflation-linked 5% increase to annual subscription fees. Due to a lack of profitability in previous years, the club requires essential maintenance to repair leaking roofs and upgrade the main entrance.
Additionally, recent fire inspections show that the club is currently non-compliant with safety standards. Rather than funding these critical capital expenditures (CAPEX) through a special levy or further subscription hikes, we have decided to suspend the early-bird member discount this year to boost our maintenance budget.
On a positive note, our financial forecasts indicate that the club has achieved a profit this year. The structural changes made over the past 2.5 years are bearing fruit. Next year's forecasts show continued cost savings, which will allow us to increase financial support for our sailing, angling, rowing, and entertainment departments.
Regarding governance, I confirm that members approved a change of auditors at the Special General Meeting on 15 May 2026. We have onboarded CFO360 auditors and will begin the formal audit process in mid-July to prepare for the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Finally, as we look to the future, we extend an open invitation to members to join the FINCOM team. We are actively looking for volunteers to join our sub-committee or step into the role of Treasurer for the new financial year.
Kind regards, Jason Mills Treasurer
